Some thoughts on the AI so far

My two French civ games on Prince was a disaster because of the surprise wars from Scythia and Rome. On my third game (as Egypt) on Prince, I had to make sure I leave a decent number of army while pursuing my cultural victory. So far, so good.

I played for about 4 hours last night and I'm already on my 3rd game (all on Prince :( ). The first 2 I had to abandon for the same reason: both were on Continents map; I sent my Warrior and newly-made Scout out to explore; a barb Scout appeared on my border so I sent my Warrior, Scout, and my newly-made Slinger off to take it out and clear the encampment; while they're all away, another barb Scout appears on my opposite border, only this time the encampment is near enough to a Horse resource that they sent a ton of mounted units and decimated my troops. I was scrambling to buy/build more troops but there was no stopping them. The 3rd game I started on Island Plates and it's going better so far.

I restarted my game twice for same reasons. I think for the 'average' player looking for fun the ai is fair to good for us. On that note I am really enjoying this version of Civilization and hats off to a great game.

Warmonger penalty is way to sensetive declaring war one time even with casic belli cause the entire world to denounce you.

I am having the impression that AI is too scared to attack the human player..

Cleopatra actually told me straight-out that she was afraid of me, haha. She literally said something like, "Your cities are to close! Your army is too powerful! We are afraid!" (nevermind the fact that I had like three archers and a warrior and my closest city was about 20 tiles from her, whatever Cleo). For some reason that irritated me, you're supposed to be the leader of a vast empire, at least pretend to make a show of strength.

But isn't her agenda that she likes powerful leaders?

It might be, I don't even remember! She was being a baby about it though, lol. There have been a few wars on my continent and at least one city captured but I have an extremely isolated start so I haven't really been involved. The other three civs on my landmass are squished together in the top half of the continent and I am all alone in the bottom half protected by a big mountain range with I think only a one-tile pass through to the other side. I'm about 100 turns in and I don't think any of the other civs have even found my empire yet, they just know me because they met my scout on their side. (Which actually raises more questions about Cleo *****ing about my cities, since I don't think she's even ever seen them...)

I'm not sure where everybody is getting the impression that the AI does not attack. In my first two games (Prince) I've had just about every Civ I met go complete warmonger on me. Even my 'Friend' Rome decided a surprise attack would be good.

This last game I just played I was defending a barbarian horse army at turn 20 - and by turn 40 both my neighbors decided to declare war as well.

It's not even fun.

Warmonger penalty really is harsh.
Brazil declared a war on me, completely out of the blue.. I had been playing a peaceful game. He refused to surrender, so I had to take him out. After doing the deed, Germany asks me to join him in war with Aztecs. They are my neighbours and always denouncing me, so I thought 'why not'.
The very next turn, Germany denounces me for being a warmonger (this is the first war I have declared in 5000 years) even though they asked me to join them. And then every single other civ denounced me.

I am now an alienated, hated warmonger. At least I have all the luxuries. It's just annoying having to press esc every turn when every Civ asks me for free luxuries. Takes the piss

Yeah the AI seems to attack a lot more than in the AI battle royale/prerelease (probably saw the AI as too passive and changed it) and it feels pretty random at times as well. Basically it means you have to keep your military in order, and you have a way of conquering AI's without a warmonger penalty. Oh, Russia, you attacked me with five war chariots in 500BC? I'm gonna have to take all of those cities.

Sure, but when the AI completely stops making sense, then the game just sort of falls apart, imo.

Started my 3rd game.Japan on an island map, and no barbs - because f those guys. I sent out an early galley for exploration, and within 2 turns of meeting America and Arabia, they declared war on me together. No relations between us whatsoever. No borders or units even remotely close to each other. I lol'd.
