I was watching you know, the fact the sea was too big for you to get there in one turn was enough for me to relax mostly.

Yeah. It would have taken me two turns minimum (with VC cards) to land on your shore. Problem is you wouldn’t know where I was going to land and I would have brought a big navy with me.

I would like to think that I would have seen it coming, but without playing any more turns it shall forever remain a mystery.
Personally as I was just about to get the Africa bonus and was strong even without it, with very few obvious enemies I would have focused in North America where, although not a breeze, the fractured land would have been easier to invade due to infighting (not to mention you can get to 15 provinces blitzing through the Caribbean).

Oh, I was certainly prioritizing North America, but I needed to stop you from getting the Africa bonus as fast as I could. If this last update happened I would have had 21 armies in the Caribbean, and many options for where to land them (all of my navies were going to the Caribbean, even though I placed them in 2 sea zones). I could pretty much roll through NA with the reinforcements from those captures alone, leaving most of my base armies and South America bonus to focus on you. 
EDIT: I could have landed anywhere from Senegal to the Cape in two turns from the next update, via the South Atlantic. You'd see me in the South Atlantic, but would have to spread your naval defenses across two sea zones, and would be even thinner with your armies across 13 provinces. I just needed to land in one.

I still think you would struggle fighting someone stronger than you WITHOUT the bonus as well as making your way through America
