SOR01 - Special OCC

sor01, the wonderful years.

Plan is to build as many wonders as possible, while at the same time we do not draw the attention of the big guys.

390BC: Sell Writing to India for their 169 gold. We can use the money.
We are WAY on top of tech.

370BC I turn OFF animations. ( To speed up play somewhat at cost of immersion. )
Feel free to put them back on.
I pull back our two curraghs. I will use them when/if we want to rush something fast, without paying double.

350

330

IBT: Henry of the Portugese drops by and pick up Literature.

310 Sell Literature to Korea for their 51 gold.

290

270

IBT We get Hanging Gardens and I start a regular spearman. ( If we do not fight, I suspect quality does not matter much, and right now I do not want to take three turns out building a barracks. We do not even have a granary.
If we had had a granary, we would have been size 10 now.

250

230

IBT: We get a spearman, and I start a granary ( Cathedral prebuild. We still have a couple of turns to complete the Granary before Constantinople grows. )

210

IBT: Monotheism comes in, and I start up Theology research.

190BC I can forget about rushing a Cathedral, as that costs quite a bit more than we can afford.
I sell Aztecs Currency for 56 gold. I am hoping a few markets will give him more money we can fuel our research and upkeep with later down the road.

170BC

IBT: Machu Pichu complete Zeus.

150

IBT: Cascade eats up Lighthouse in Seoul.

130 I partial rush the Cathedral by way of Collosseum. ( Rush a colloseum, and switch to Cathedral. )
I then work forests to save yet another turn ( By getting 20 spt. )

110

IBT: We get our Cathedral, and I fire up another spearman before starting granary.

90BC Keep an eye out on Korea, as they may get a tech we do not have when they reach Medieval times. Right now they are missing Construction and Polytheism.
I veto myself, and start up a granary before I can statr prebuilding Sistines.

70

IBT: Korea comes and picks up Polytheism.

50

30

IBT: Granary completes, and I start a Sistine prebuild.

10BC Ghandi has some 50 money, but I will hold on to our techs for now. Given a window after wonder building is over, I suggest we raze a coupel of Indian cities close to us, in order to liberate two luxes.

We still have a substantial tech lead, but woefully weak in military. Be on the lookout for potential sneak attacks by any AI.
Do not complete the Colloseum, if you can get SIstines instead. Wonder cascade is not dead, so if we can keep techs to ourselves until the two wonders out there completes, then we are set for Sistines and Bachs at least, SHakes probably as well.

Save is here.

Grimjack

IMHO we should not go after India at all...they could refound the cities anyway, our culture is not so strong that we'd cover all the tiles to secure those luxes, and the last thing we want is a furious neighbour. I'd be extra careful with them, sign rop as part of a tech trade, and maybe give them a gift or two.

Got it.

I think we should try to keep the peace with india for some time. When we are able to crush some indian cities, we are able to defend ourself, and IMO thats all we need to survive this game.

taking the burden of reign

preturn check:

our city is well
diplomatic relaitions are quite bad. We have to work there somewhat...

i sell poly to india for 67 gp and spices (ghandi is now polite with us!)

press enter

IBT -
aztecs want mono, well take it and leave! at least they are now polite
indians are building ToA - wish you much luck...

1 - 30AD

i sell mono to portugal for 30 and 3 gpt. Its already out, so we can make some money from it before others do

2 - 50AD all quiet

3 - 70AD

we don't have many embassies
embassy with portugal - now polite
embassy with inca - still annoyed

IBT - we get Theology->printing press (we can research pp and edu while building sistine, so i decide pp first. So we have a longer chance to get something from the GL)
aztecs finish ToA
inca cascades to great wall, finishes great wall

4 - 90AD

switch colloseum->sistine due in 29 turns

IBT - aztecs are building sun tzu

5 - 110AD

monty has feudalism, but won't give it away at any price

6 - 130AD quite

7 - 150AD quite

8 - 170AD quite

IBT - some indian settler pairs are moving near us

9 - 190AD quite

10 - 210AD

the people really love us, i build some stairs and a second floor (in case someone visits us ;))
constantinople grows to size 10
i sell lit to skaka for 21 gp

IBT portugal declares war to the aztecs :)

11 - 230AD

protugal now has feudalism, i will look in the GL next turn
i trade currency to india for 1 gp, wines and a worker, which i will merge to our city. He will soon be assimiliated to our nationality
constantinople size 11

IBT - we learn feudalism from the GL
a portugise galley enters our sea territory

12 - 250AD

i sell feudalism to korea for 73gp
our worker has finished everything he could to for the rest of this age, so i merge him with the city

IBT - zulu want construction, i give it
the portugise galley sails on :)

13 - 260AD

science at 80%, pp in 3 turns

IBT portugise galley out of sight

14 - 270AD

build embassy in korea, still annoyed :(

15 - 280AD

science at 70%
sell engineering to portugal for 120 gp
give engineering for free to korea and inca, improving our relation to polite (is debatable, but i think we need to be generous at certain imes, to make some friends)
i also gift math to babylon, he is the only one who doesn't have it till now, also now polite

IBT portugise ask us for an alliance vs the aztects, i have to say no, with all respect
we get pp -> education at 100% in 12 turns(-2 gp), sistine done in 12 turns :)

16 - 290AD

i sell CoL to shaka for 21 gp

17 - 300AD quite

18 - 310AD

aztecs have chivalry, hopefully someone else gets it in the next 10 turns :)
i sell feudalism to inca for 30gp and 1 gpt

19 - 320AD

science to 90%, education still in 9 turns

IBT - koreas are building sun tzu
another portugise galley crossed (hopefully) our sea territory

20 - 330AD quite

Education and sistine come in 8 turns. After edu i think astronomy for copernicus would be good, then to free artistry for shakes
We should build a uni and colloseum while waiting for astronomy.
aztecs and zulu are annoyed with us, everyone else polite :)
Constantinople can't grow anymore until shakes. Currently we make the most production availible, leaving us with no wasted extend food.
We don't have embassies with zulu, aztecs and babylon. I suggest to make them soon with the former two.
We have a good amount of money, but i leave this decision to the next player.

At the moment we would hit cultural vic around 2040, after sistine around 1970, after uni around 1950.

I think everything after 1900 would be really dangerous, so we need some more. But it looks good,

Hopefully we can keep the peace.

Here a view on our glorius city:

SOR1_330AC_Ciy.jpg

Take THIS to lead us to victory :)

Yoshi, have you taken into account the culture doubling of stuff 1000 years old, as that seems like late, given the number of wonders we have ?

Also, workers. I would want to have at least 6 workers once we have Shakes, because we need to be able to deal with pollution, and hopefully rails soon thereafter.

Do Micro our city, to food surplus as long as it doesn't shave turns off of our wonders. We NEED workers in just a couple of turns, and it takes a long time to get them.

Grimjack

agreed with Grimjack, definitely need more workers. Also, we want to keep the tech pace slow! The slower the pace, the more culture we can build, the less the chance of another AI stealing victory. Selling tech for peanuts, as we did in that last turn, is not the best way to achieve this. I agree with the occasional gift, as yoshi did with babylon, but that should be for old, outdated techs. I can't believe we sold a monopoly tech (engineering) for 120g! That's maybe ten times less than its market value.

For the calculation i used a calculator from the board. Its has proven right in my two OCC's. Getting shakes and copernicus will shorten the time amount significant.

The pollution won't be a problem until industrialization.

6 worker are way to much for our only city. Everyone above 2 is wasted. Remember, when we are in the IA, we only have to survive. We need to build up a military, and i doubt the speed there is a crucial as during the wonder race. I also have some doubts about our ability for rails. We need to import both coal and iron. Its hard to do because no civ is really large (and therefore covers a lot of land and resources) and ai's are really bad at connecting enough resources. I had a regent OOC whe i wasn't able to rail at all, because it wasn't possible to trade for coal on a pangea map. In my monarch game it took a time. But when i got industrialization the was no more iron availible, so i was left without factory.
I think the constantinople MM is good at the moment, because we're in the most critical phase, where we need our wonders asap.

[edit]
I can't believe we sold a monopoly tech (engineering) for 120g! That's maybe ten times less than its market value.

A market price isn't availiable for a lot of turns! Also it won't be a monopoly tech for long, and giving it away may allows invention to be researched before our GL is oblsolent.
Also keeping the tech pace slow. How? The AI research, and we have to research fast to get all our wonders fast enough.
We need trades for
1. make the Ai happy
2. get some money (we don't need an incredible pile, although it can help)
3. get techs we not have. Will occur because the race to shakes slows us toward the IA
in that order IMO

If we get shakepeare's then pollution will be a problem, since pollution from pop is far worse than pollution from a factory.

As for selling tech, if a market price is not available then just don't sell! We don't need invention to pop from the library, we can trade for it. We want to be the tech leaders to control the wonder race, let the AIs have to research these techs, that itself will slow the AI pace, by giving them away we are accelerating that pace.

But we need trade or gift to ALL nations at certain points. We can't exclude the biggest brawlers in the yard, because they are close to us in research. I inherited the game with everyone was annoyed with us, and i doubt this a good way to go. When one of this civs decides the biggest city in the world would fit very well into their empire, it just doesn't matter how big our tech lead is anymore!
I don't advise selling every tech for peanuts away, but at certain times we need to do such things. It looks silly, when we look at it from a standard game point where we don't need the peace so desperatly. But peace is the only thing we can't afford to loose until we have infantry and artillery!

Nad, you're next. Have you got it?

This is my first time admining a SG. Reading others, I see that often admins post an updated roster (who just played, who's on deck...), and I though perhaps my not doing so is confusing people somehow.

Do you guys want something like this, or are things fine?

I've been waiting anxiously to see what happends next. The suspense is just killing me! So, what's up Nad?

ack, very sorry, did not realize I was up to play. Will play tonight.

Soren, it might be helpful and in any case will never be a hinderance. Sometimes the previous player will post the roster, but if it has been 24 hours without a 'got it' or if the next player has commented without a 'got it' then a quick reminder might help:)

SOR01, Inherited Turn 330AD

Everything looks very nice. We control contacts and are well on course for a culture victory at this stage of the game.

I found the remaining embassies, with Aztecs, Babylon and the Zulu.

btw, did we disband the dromons? I would have liked to have kept those, they are excellent at uncovering the map, which is important in itself and can translate to lots of gold later through the best world map. Never mind though...

IT: Portuguese galley sailing, approaching Indian shores.

Turn 1, 340AD: it looks as though the various continents know each other, but not every civ on each continent knows alll the civs on the other continents. The longer this lasts, the greater our advantage, so I think printing press is a tech we should hog as long as possible :).

Turn 2, 350AD: zzz

IT: Inca and Portugal start Sun Tzu

Turn 3, 360AD: zzz

Turn 4, 370AD: zzz

Turn 5, 380AD: twiddling my thumbs, waiting for Sistine to complete.

It appears that more and more civs are meeting each other, and our contact control is rapidly diminishing. Nevertheless, I believe we should do nothing at all to hasten the process, let's not be tempted by the pennies on offer to sell contact around. The value we gain from each turn that each AI does not know any other is vastly greater than the market price for contact sales.

Turn 6, 390AD: science to 80%, education still in 2.

IT: Babylon declares war on the Aztecs :). Aztecs start Knight's Templar

Turn 7, 400AD: preparations for the education and Chapel party.

IT: Education comes in, obsoleting the Great Library, astronomy started at 90%, eta 15 turns.

SOR01SistineNad.jpg

Start university.

Palace expanded.

Turn 8, 410AD: zzz

Turn 9, 420AD: zzz

Turn 10, 430AD: zzz

IT: Korea demands contact with Babylon...bah, not worth the trouble of war, given.

Wines from India come to an end.

Turn 11, 440AD: The downside of this is that India is now annoyed. Notice they're in anarchy, so maybe their attitude will improve once they emerge into a similar government.

Turn 12, 450AD: Republican India is now cautious.

IT: Constantinople's university complete, start colosseum.

Turn 13, 460AD: science whacked up to 100%, astronomy in 7 at -6gpt.

Turn 14, 470AD: Korea has a bit of cash, so useless monarchy sold to them for a right of passage and 109g...Korea is gracious :)

As India is a Republic I may as well "give" them monarchy too. We get a right of passage, wines, spices, and a second gracious friend :).

Turn 15, 480AD: zzz

Turn 16, 490AD: zzz

IT: Aztecs and Portugal make peace, aztecs start again at Templar.

Turn 17, 500AD: zzz

IT: Aztecs and Babylon make peace.

Turn 18, 510AD: Inca and Aztecs now have invention and chivalry, so it is time to cash in on our theology tech.

Theology to Inca for right of passage, invention, 115g + 29gpt...and a third gracious neighbour.

Theology to Aztecs for Chivalry (adding rop would only take us close to a deal, so not signed).

Science down to 80%

IT: Constantinople's colosseum completed, Templar started.

Inca begin Leo's.

Turn 19, 520AD: we are now gaining 53cpt, very healthy, as lots of stuff is not yet 1000 years old and we're in excellent shape for more wonders.

Science down to 70%, Astronomy due next turn.

IT: Astronomy researched, start Banking at max (10 turns)...[this is tentative, we can have a team discussion and the next player can change it as no beakers are yet invested. Navigation, Gunpowder and Music Theory are other potential choices].

Aztecs start Leo's, Portugal start Templar.

Turn 20, 530AD: Constantinople changes to Copernicus, due in 17 turns.

Astronomy has opened up sea routes, so I take the opportunity to sell optional Chivalry to Korea for iron, incense, silks, 2g + 2gpt.

Good luck to the next player!

THE SAVE

Nice turns.

Although I hate to do this, I'm going to have to ask to be skipped, as I'm on Spring Break for the next week or so. Hopefully I can get back in before the culture of Constantinople rules the world :)
