Soviet Contributions to Modern world

[I don't know about the other nations mentioned, but you can't claim that there was "equality" in voting matters in the US and the UK at those dates. In Britain, women did indeed get the vote in 1918 - but only if they were over 30. It wasn't until 1928 that women were thought capable of voting at the same age as men. And in the US, of course, it was only white women who got the vote in federal elections in 1920, the franchise being extended to black ones only in the 1960s. The same thing is true of Australia, where aborigines couldn't vote in commonwealth elections until 1962. So while these countries may have had "female suffrage" at an early stage, they certainly didn't have "equality".

I don't know about the deal with Australia and the Aboriginals, but I do know that, according to the Constitution, Blacks have been allowed to vote since 1865. Disenfranchisement occured at the state level, because the Supreme Court decided in the Plessey vs. Ferguson case in 1896 that the enforcement of the Fourteenth Amendment (equal protection under the law) was the state's responsibility, so African Americans in states whose leadership didn't want them voting didn't get to vote. African Americans could still vote in the more liberal states, such as the northern or western states. So African Americans had the right to vote, but whether or not that right was protected by the powers that be is subject to one's geographic location.

AK-47 is a obvious one, it's the most used assault rifle in the entire world.

Contributing propaganda to the Soviets is dumb, it has been used since ancient egypt, the United States does more then its fair share, it even uses it within the country.

I mean I'm only stating this because it's obvious and well known despite the ignorant people and there comments that will follow but, they use to show Reefer Madness in schools to educate children on the dangers of marijuana, it was created by the government and it basically says if you smoke weed you'll rape people, kill people, steal and basically become some demon.

That was shown to little kids in school and it's completely false and it was shown as fact to educate kids.. think about it.

How about the Sizzler, it's a Russian missle that completely obsoletes our carriers. We have absolutely no defense against it, great little missle they have, they even sold some to China.

The new soviet fighter jet is also superior in performance to the f22 raptor it just isnt as advanced with all the features and stealth technology so unless they can see it most likely it still wont be able to take it on.

Russia has always had superior rocket technology.

They have no defense against the Exocet or Harpoon, either, and the Harpoon has a longer range than the Klub, and both can be fired from ships, submarines, AND aircraft, whereas the Ruskies never mounted it on a ship.

You mean the new Russian SU-47? Its years behind the Raptor, as is the MiG 1.44.

Russia has always had superior rocket technology.

Russia has always been behind in rocket and missile technology, the only reason it appears differently is that they mount their cruisers with a whole mess of them

IIRC Soviet rocket engineering was ahead of the US variety — has to do with cooling systems, allowing the liquid fuel to cool the exhaust directly. Very, very dangerous, but nice if you can solve the engineering problems, which the Soviets, but not the US, did. It makes for more powerful rocket engines.

These days we're all sharing, so there's less national specificity. But apparently these powerful engines was one of the things the Russians brought to the table when negotiating about cooperation with NASA.

there was a brief period in the late '50s where the soviets had a slight edge (sputnik). however, von braun and his cohorts gave the US, imho, the initial edge in the post-war period.

now, while the soviets may have indeed pioneered certain aspects of rocketry (SLBMs for example), the quality and effectiveness of their projects were, at best, mediocre. the converted whiskeys were junk imo. it wasn't until the american GW class that SLBMs were actually reliable.

Gelion,

stop patronizing the dude, will ya?

he's right btw...the soviets had always been (and the russians are now as well) behind the west in terms of rocket technology.

Its not what I asked...

Your words dont count a lot for me. Save yourself the self easteem and let the guy I actually respect answer the question.
real cute :)

it'd probably behoove you to refrain from posting such nonsene and instead stay on topic...

Cheezy, be the wizard man as you are. Tell me when was the first battle use of Russian rockets? The year at least....

What's your point? That the Russians never used them in war, so we can't judge them? Or that the Russians fielded something like the Stalin Organ before the United States got the Calliopes out? The Russians have always been behind in rocket and missile technology, that's why they abandoned the cruise missile project under Krushchev in favor of the ICBM, and even why the Russian nukes have higher yields; because they couldn't hit a target with the same degree of precision that the Americans could. The Klub is nothing special, just another anti-ship missile like the rest of us have. If anything, its indicative of them finally catching up with the West in that respect, but until now I would not describe the military arm of Soviet/Russian rocketry to be superior to that of the United States. It was definitely ahead of other nations, notably China (but then who isn't?), and notable in its own regard, though, and I think their address of the American carrier threat with huge missile submarines and cruisers was brilliant.

Because of the cold war (that wouldn't occour without the Soviet Union) the Western world became closer friends, (our mutual struggle brings our nations closer each other) and Europe raised again with help from the Marshall plan etc. Many of the results from the weapon and space race, (technology race) have made our lives better and easier, the internet for instance. As said before, the fear for revolution gave workers better rights.
Of course, I know a lot of bad stuff happened in the cold war era, but at least we can learn from it so we won't do more mistakes in the future.

I also think that this discussion is pretty screwed up, because our generations have been raised to hate the Soviet Union and communism. (Unless you're from the 2nd or 3rd world, or is really old, like 100+ ;) )

And the Soviet national anthem (Hymn to the Soviet Union) is the best national anthem I know about, if you hear it, you'll probably agree. I recommend to read the lyrics, too.

Right, he purged a vast array of people. Some happened to be Jews.
Basically, I'm intrigued by the assertion that Stalin or any Soviet leader attacked Jews specifically. I've studied Jewish history extensively & never heard a hint of that. Trotsky & many Russian communists were Jews because they saw communism as relief from their terrible persecution under the tsars

His foreign Minister was Jewish wasnt he? Litminov. Hardly the appointee of an anti-semite

They contributed some pretty good hockey teams.
