Spam

I think you're right. :)

Too true as well. Sometimes some says something so ****** a smiley is the only way to diffuse the situation. :)

Different forums also tolerate different amounts of spam. "Humor and Jokes" has a lot of one-word/smilie only replies, but it is generally tolerated, since the evironment is so laid-back. But in "World History" a poster is expected to speak only when he has something to say. Remember:
"It is better to say nothing and be thought a fool, than to speak and remove all doubt."
-Abraham Lincoln (may not be exact, but very close)

There was a recent Civ 3 General Discussion post in a thread started by yet another person who found the AI "cheating"

(why do I think that thread like that is likely to be spam heavy, as it is similar to announcing you found perpetual motion, probability near zero)

Anyhow, the responder spent most of their post with an interesting (to me) discussion of the derivation of the word, Spam (Hormel, SPiced hAM) with a little light discussion of the main topic, which was the instant appearance of an AI defender when war is declared against them. Someone else posted that the poster who explained Spam was spamming. I didn't think so, but thought that it might be something that could be decided by someone who understands better what we are trying to do.

Is it spam/off topic to discuss something that another poster discussed in a previous post, but that is not terribly relevant to the general topic? In this case, a discussion of spam had nothing to do with the AI "cheating" but flowed relatively logically from several previous posts.

See Pirate, post 34 in Finally some actual proof of AI cheating...

I think it was not spam and this type of post should be encouraged. Am I wrong?

And yes, we would like to keep it that way. ;)

And the point of this thread is?

There is a point to this thread. I Was confused on what exactly is spam. It gets confusing in OT because there is so much spam, most of it happening without being stopped, not because of incompetence of the moderators, but the sheer volume. This stuff was getting by, and I didn't know if it was actually okay or it was just not looked at. I have learned more about what spam actually is from this thread and it has lead to me (among other reasons) to stop spamming once and for all. :)

somtimes there are just no moderators around to check up on things, and make sure that uber-spam threads 9the kind with no contributing, bad, "fatty", spam) are locked up, and in the immortal phrase, burned into my memory in a comment by XIII a LONG time ago "sacraficed on the alter of TF" :)
