Sparta: Rise and Fall

I agree. Perhaps a satchel bag and shoulder strap. Fully in agreement on the "sun cap" headware.

So who was King #2 for that Leonidas dude? :)

That would be Leotychidas, who ruled during the same time period as Leonidas I (the famous one known for his valor versus the Persians at Thermopylae). He was of the Eurypontid dynasty whereas Leonidas was of the Agiad dynasty. These were always the two lineages that ruled over Sparta.

I also prefer the stone throwers to have a sachel from which they can take the stones. Just seems too militarily naive to have to rely on stones that may or may not be lying around on the ground. ;)

Leonidas was the king who led the 300 Spartans in the battle of Thermopylae, and who also perished there. He was a new king at this time, as there was a bit of a feud between his predecessor, Demaratus (who had fled to Persia), and Leotychidas' predecessor, Cleomenes (who put Leonidas in power, but "mysteriously" killed himself)

Oh. Well, if you were an Ancient Greek, a Spartan none the less, would you not want to name your local villager's child after the king of the beasts? ;)

Nah, I`d name him Hippo, and he`d grow up having long hair and smoking weed, a great hero that would slay many a magic dragon..

So, any previews around? would the Landsknecht hat (wihout the feather) fit for the sunhat? Or you guys found something better?

What hat does fit better for the unit ?

What units should be made exactly (slinger, stone thrower, javelineer) ? How must everyone of them look like ? What kind of cloth should we choose ? What colors ?

Please, try to describe every unit.

I would love a slinger personally :D
The first one would fit best. That cloth looks a bit cumbersome :)

And if one was to do a javelineer, would a peltast be out of concideration? :)

I would say, the second from the right should be the garb of choice (I just cant wrap my mind around a near-naked grown man hurling stones) for the stone and javelin thrower, with either cap #1 or #2 from the left. Is there a fur cap prop floating somwhere around here? In any case, that front panel of hide or cloth definately has to stay.

The order of battle which I was thinking of would go something like this:

Stone Thrower = Pre-bronze age warrior, could possibly upgrade to the simple Iron Age javelin thrower shown in my original post.

Slinger would preceed the archer I should think or function as a replacement for Sparta and the med civs right up til the Iron Age and the advent of the toxotis archers and related types.

The Peltast would ofcourse be a seperate line (possibly mercenary or special resource?) as they would represent warriors of lesser states called up or hired for battle. Depending upon player preference, we could use either a peltast or an archer outright (I use both, with said special conditions).

How's that?

What colours should we give him (cape, hip, sun hat) ? What about civ-color ? What should we add or modify ? Should we change pilums to javelins ?

Any suggestions in general ?

Holy cheese that's awesome!

Very cool looking Akontistai, Sandris. :goodjob:

Idea: Leave the sun hat the way it is, and civ colour the cloth and cape.

Definately make the switch to straight javelins or perhaps even short spears at the extreme. Agreed on providing this string of units with civ-specific colors as well.

You should probably always do civ-colour for any unit you do, and then if you feel like doing a non-civ colour version, do that as well. Civ-colour is sort of a basic expectation of custom units, methinks.

Non-Roman pilae, certainly.

Question: wouldn't it be better in terms of historical accuracy to have that guy lose his loincloth and go commando?

I do hope that question was of an ironic nature! I mean, we could definitely add to the historical accuracy and make them naked, but damn, I think that some people just don't dig that. ;)

Well kind of ironically, but not entirely. It's not like we have to turn him into a porn star like some of the Amazon units that have been done, but I think his gonch just looks silly. Let the guy be archaic Greek, after all, and maybe at civ scale it won't be such a big deal anyway.

If nothing else, I am going to try to get someone to make a buck-naked Celtic Gestatae spearman with crazy limed hair. I already bugged Sandris once about that unit. I figger why not in this respect as well?
