That might be the reason it was implemented (although I never heard TF say that, even though I remember reading his announcement about custom avatars when they were introduced), but it is still a reward, IMO. And it is treated the same by posters as the 10,000 post thing would be (thinking, "Yay, when I get 300 posts I get to have a custom avatar!"), even if TF isn't trying to do so.

However, if that is really the reason it was implemented, I can see why there would be no need for a 10,000 post thing.

I think that would be one of the things effecting the 300 post limit on custom avatars, but I also think there were other things that effected TF's decision to put the limit on there.

Perhaps someone could share those other things with me, since there really hasn't been a good arguement for the 300 post limit yet.

Well, let me do my best:

This is a Civ-site. In the Civ forums (at least GD and S&T), most of the posters use non-custom/Civvish avatars, because they haven't reached 300 yet. Civvish avatars give these forums a Civvish feel. In the other forums (especially OT), most of the posters, I think, use custom avatars, because they've reached 300. Custom avatars are pretty; they look cool. And the combination of the two types of avatars give this site a good mix of Civvishness and coolness/originality. If everyone had a Civ avatar, it wouldn't look as "flavorful," and similarly, if everyone had a custom avatar (like at Gamecatcher ), it wouldn't look as Civvish.

Just a theory. :D Also, IMO, giving posters an award is kinda nice. Sure, it may increase spam just a little, but it also encourages good, quality posts. I remember I posted quite a bit before I had 300 posts, so I could get my custom avatar. I did not spam, though. (At least not that much, and I hope the mods don't dissagree. :D)

Pah! Down with elitism!
So you reach the 10,00 mark, but who cares!
I didn't post spam to get where my postcount is now, and would never post just to increase it.

It is the taking part that counts.
A 1 post 'newbie' or a 5000 post veteran are just the same in my eyes...

Anyone can reach the posting summit where eagles fly with enough patience and dedication.

PS
Long live custom avatars!

Not at all!

CFC is a classless society...And I definitely have no class!

:D

But if you have no class wouldn't that mean you have no manners or perhaps even morals? And without morals wouldn't you want absolute power? and wouldn't this increase your power to further help your goal? I think so!

I say, yes, when the first poster reaches 10,000 they should name the status "Grand Sultan" in honor of that poster ;)

I could remove every spam post, that would kill a number of posters over the 6,000 range.

I vote in favor of AoA's proposal! :) That would probably single-handedly cut down on the problem of all the postcount arguments! Post count is just a number, it shouldn't affect a person's opinion about someone. Again though, removing all spam posts from the forum (which would probably take a long time) would be a good step in the right direction, in my opinion.

It would also "prove" how important post count is to some people~ I'm not into making work for mods (believe it or not, Cracker! ;) ) and I have to imagine AoA has better stuff to do than go through the threads trimming "spam". Like the constant demands to make Off topic posts not count, hide post count, etc. it is making a mountain out of molehill.

If people just got down to posting, then the problem would be solved!

this gets very close to insulting the few people you can mean (given the low number of people over 6,000) as spammers......
