Speculation on civ unlocks in the base game

Most of those aren't too bad
Agreed, but I see fair complaints on Reddit about Spain. On one hand it makes it where you always have a chance of becoming Spain (unlike say you aren't always going to find 3 camels for Abbassids) but you do have to lose a settlement first

It looks like there are a lot more ways to unlock civs. If you don’t check the “Show all requirements” box, the UI will only show conditions that you can feasibly meet at the moment?

At least, it likely hides the play as civ or leader requirements (besides the ones you are) as it isn't something you can achieve no matter what you do in an ongoing game.

Yeah, it would be really weird if the only way to unlock America is to play as Rome.

I love the idea of having to do the Reconquista to play Spain. That's great flavor.
