Speeding up Firefox?

Firefox is cooler and more beautiful

I can deal with people thinking Firefox cooler than Opera(though I don't think it is), but Opera definitely looks a lot sleeker and cleaner than Firefox by default.

Somebody I know was having trouble with Firefox in 64-bit Vista, and at the time there didn't seem to be any solution for it (even after extensive googling), so I pointed her towards Opera. I'm not sure if she's still using that.

It doesn't work with my firefox 3.05.

Apart from installing Opera, Fasterfox might be an idea. I'm not sure if it's any good, but you might want to try.

It doesn't seem that useful. Prefetching, while some may like it is a matter of personal taste, not to mention more memory usage.

The rendering settings might be nice but I don't really have an issue with them as they stand (except the way the page jumps when I'm holding the scroll bar while images are getting rendered into the page).

I know of a program called FireTune which is supposed to make the connection faster. Can't remember if it worked.

I don't have any problems when it uses memory. It's only when the processor usage goes up (or if the memory usage is ungodly high) that it slows down. I'd consider overclocking but I'm a little leery of it.

Okay -- another question. Sometimes I accidentally close Firefox. But if I try to open it up immediently (maybe 2-3 seconds), it says it's already running but not responding. It seems to be taking its time closing -- what gives?

Right click on the taskbar, select Task Manager. Processes tab. Find Firefox.exe, right click and end process. Then restart Firefox.

Firefox does seem to be slow to load and unload....

Yes, but by the time I get the process manager open it's gone. I have slow reflexes.

I find adblock in particular increases my FF start up times by about 4x. Yet I'd rather get rid of every other extension than adblock.

@aimee
Firefox is bulky and takes time between giving up its window until releasing its last file and unsetting its lockfile.

If it waited before giving up the window, people would sit there clicking the close button until it did, thinking there was a problem with it. If it brought up a courtesy window people might think it strange/unnecessary/a waste of resources or whatever.

It looks like you're caught up in the 'lowest common denominator' so to speak.

P.S. This is one of those subtle thingies that makes people try Opera :mischief:

I tried Opera once -- it was nice, but not my thing.

I use Opera, and it does exactly the same.
