*Spoiler1* Gotm24-Korea - Enter Middle Ages

Civ 1.29 on Mac

Ancient Age

I move the settler 1 to the NW and settle Seoul there. I research terra Cotta at max. Builds are Warrior x3, Granary, settler. I settle using RCP at 4/4.5 for the inner ring. I meet Baejke, Goguyreo and the Han in short order. I crank out settlers as fast as I can and I grab horses. I am able to keep up with some trading.

However the Korean people are boxed in and the only way to expand is war. So I build barracks and train veteran warriors. Then after discovering iron working I upgrade and attack Baejke. I quickly seize two cities but then it is slow going as they have iron too. The war goes on far too long but eventually my men prevail and we take their capital, which had the pyramids. We sign peace for techs.

Meanwhile, the Gog’s are growing like weeds and really building. Two of my cities flip to them (ouch). But the Han attack the Gogs and kick hem down hard. Eventually the Gog’s surrender when they have 1 city left. Cities flip back from the Han to the Gogs.

I am way behind on infrastructure and start a building campaign. Then I note a big stack of Han heading towards me. I buy 3 techs for GPT in the hopes that will dissuade them from attacking me. It doesn’t so I get 3 techs cheap. The war is generally inconclusive but I gain 3 former Gog cities before we end the war. I also gain a great leader from the war who is used for an army.

Then I incorporate the rest of the Baejke people into my empire. All this warring has left Korea way behind as other nations are completing wonders from techs we don’t have.

At the end of the ancient age the Han’s come back for more. To be continued …

Here I come too, even if I am not sure I will make it this month...

Well, as much as everyone here I loved the game scenario. The AA units are really, really wonderful. And the 'mon' instead of the leader heads... :worship:

Starting position
I decide to settle 1NW, with the second city 1SW of the starting position.
The idea is to develop Seoul to implement Qitai's settler + warrior factory (which deserves another :worship: ). Later on, as soon as the second city is running, the plan is to use them both as settler factories only (2 settlers every 5 turns).

It turned out that the map setting doesn't allow for a lot of cities to be settler in the QSC period. Since I messed a bit (less than I usually do, though :p ) with micromanaging, the later settler flow allowed me to catch up somewhat with city number.

Technology
Started Pottery at max science. If we really are isolated (or "peninsulated"...) the risk is just too high.
After Pottery, 40-turns research on Writing and Literature.
Literature came in 1000 BC, when Confucianism (and Republic) were started at max science.

Exploration
Two warriors went exploring (sorry, no minimap).

The first one south, following the mountain range. Met Goguryeo in 3450BC and the Han in 2550 BC.
The second went east - north-east, meeting the Baekje in 3250BC

After some more exploration, it is clear that the four of us are sharing too small a landmass...

Cities
2430 BC P'yongyang
2110 BC Wonsan
1700 BC Pusan
1650 BC Puhang (southern Iron)
1625 BC Yondok
1500 BC Andong
1350 BC Samchok (flipped to Gogury in 800 BC)
1300 BC Kanyang
1225 BC Qitaigyon
1175 BC Snagawon
1150 BC Bremp'o
1100 BC Cheju
1025 BC Hyangsan

Wars
My city placement strategy allowed the Baekje to found a city right on the Iron source nearby (as I discovered later on) -they beat me by a couple of turns to that spot.

Without Iron I would not be able to build any Bushi... This cannot be allowed! The second closest site is to the south, where I was expanding anyway. I decide to settle there as fast as I can, then connect later on.
In retrospect, it might have been better to build a few Archers and take the Baekje city right away, but I had no large military at that time.

I managed to get a reasonable number of Bushi (fourteen) around 700 BC.
I was originally thinking to take the Gogury, who were weaker and had no Iron, but the Baekje were starting to grow a little too strong, and had built the Colossus, Great Library and Pyramids, which made them the target.

In 470 BC the Great Library was taken and peace signed with the Baekje. The following turn the Middle Ages started.

After looking at some of the other maps, I noticed that the 1st city was built in place. I moved mine one space to take advantage of the fresh water so I wouldn't have to build an aquaduct. Did I not need to move or is the advantage so great of starting in place?

Also, when I had automatic workers, they seemed to want to work in range of the enemy. I lost many this way along my borders. Is there some fix to this besides trying to control them all? :)

Placement of the first city is always a wildly discussed issue in the GOTM games. Have a look at the pre-game discussion thread of the partciular game and you'll get all the pros and cons of settling in place for that map.

About automatic workers; don't use them. They are not only letting themselves get captured, they also suck at improving vital terrain. You can do it much much better yourself.

The only time automated workers can be considered is late in the game (i.e. the modern age), when your workers' most important task is clearing up pollution.

Gleodhman, as per the instructions on the sticky just above this thread: when you're discussing city placement in a GOTM, post your comments in the appropriate spoiler thread - in this case, Spoiler 1.

Spoiler 1 : Ancient Ages (4000BC to 350BC)

QSC Period (4000BC to 1000BC)
I settled Seoul at the start location and started it on a Barracks as a pre-build for a Granary, then researched Terra Cotta at 100%. I eventually managed to set up and maintain a 4 turn warrior/settler factory, but it took me until 2150BC to do it (mainly through gross incompetence on my part :)).

The whole QSC period was spent in peaceful building, but building military ready for some "interesting times" ahead. I didn't produce any military for a while though (3050BC completed an Otomo Spearman), and wrote this in my QSC log in 3400BC :

Baekje Warrior appears to N, I make contact. It’s a little scary that I’ve got no military. That Warrior could take my capital unheeded!

The next contact was with the Goguryeo in 2630BC, then the Han Dynasty in 2270BC. I continued exploring in the hope of finding a land bridge (I've missed these in the past) or goody hut, but failed to find either.

I built in a 3 ring RCP pattern at a distance of 4, 8 and 12 :

Remaining Ancient Ages (1000BC to 350BC)
I continued expanding, but started concentrating on military ready to start war. In 650BC I upgraded 8 warriors to Bushi, had 8 horsemen and 11 warrior awaiting upgrade, so started a war against the Goguryeo. At this point the miltitary advisor claimed I was strong compared to all three known AIs, and the Baekje actually gave me 49g for an alliance against the Goguryeo.

War this early is a bit of a 1st for me. I found it a little upsetting :( that so many of the Goguryeo cities autorazed, which left quite a bit of land free for the Han and Baekje to expand into (I had stopped producing settlers).

In 470BC the Baekje broke our alliance by making peace with the Goguryeo, so I made peace with the Goguryeo too, leaving them just 1 city. They gave me 3 Workers and their World Map.

In 350 BC I completed research of Currency and traded it around for The Republic and Shamanism to enter the Middle Ages.

Here's my minmap for 350BC :

Let us omit your minimap since it would violate the fairly straightforward rules that limit all information to your starting landmass. - cracker
