I been thinking about sponsoring a child and I wanted to ask you guys if anyone here if they ever did this? I asked this question a year or two back on some other game forum but don't remember what one or the replies to much.
My mom does some of that. There's various aid charities that deal with specific children, but you might consider charities that deal with developing rural communities as a whole, as in effect that will aid the children the community.
My dad is going to start sponsoring an African child. I think he still hasn't started but the sponsorship only costs 10€ every month, you get to pick the child (they show you pictures of them and tell you about them), and for those 10€ the child [elementary school I think] gets books, pencils, meal and everything that is necessary for basic education. I'll check into which organization exactly it is.
He's saying that many times aid projects fail not for lack of good intentions, and not for local corruption or obstruction, but because the people giving and engaging in the aid do not understand the local conditions and history. And the local people are not fully engaged in it, because the programs don't have a history of working. So the approaches as a whole fail.
