Square Enix just tore down my friend's YouTube review on Final Fantasy 13-2 the VERY SECOND it was put up, claiming it violated copyright. And that wasn't a metaphor. Literally, the very same second. Literally.

Companies just don't understand fair use, I guess. Because a review is the most BASIC and WELL-KNOWN of fair use policies. It's sick.

EDIT: Do note that there was not time for any human to watch the 15 minute review. Because the takedown happened in the space of 5 seconds. Hell, if you battled ACTUAL PIRACIES with such ferocity, maybe people wouldn't pirate so many games!

I imagine they worked out a deal with Youtube to all the rights to FFXIII.2 stuff and thus have the right to take it down.

Fair use allows for your friend to make the video. It doesn't mean youtube has to host it.

Please explain this to me, then, Contre:

Link to video.

Or this:

Link to video.

Or maybe this:

Link to video.

Huh. I wonder why they're allowed.

Perhaps after watching them, SE approved them?

I have no idea really.

Is it the automatic content ID one, or a manually generated notice? The automatic content-ID ones... Those people probably filed a counter-notice and either they ignored it (in which it stayed up) or they went "well, yeah, fair use" and allowed it.

Actually Im not sure if the content-ID that counts for video or just audio....

The manually generated ones I would not be surprised if there was something automated behind that too.

One guy had a lot of fun messing around with YouTube's audio content ID.

Either ways may be worth filing a counter-notice. Can't say 100% it'll work though.

Can you post your fiends review, I kinda wanna watch it now. lol

But yea what Contre said

Youtube policies are pretty clear in the subject, both in terms of what you can upload and what companies can do to take down material.
Very often companies do not bother to check if the material uploaded is really legal (according to fair use).
The user has to file a counter-notice to ave the video re-established.

I find it very unfair: companies should first demonstrate that a copyright violation really occurred before being allowed to request a take-down.

did the review include a music soundtrack?
I got several fallout new vegas movies pulled because of the music industry objecting.

I wish people would stop watching YouTube Let's Plays. They are, quite frankly, the best argument for SOPA that there is.

Nothing, but YouTube Let's Plays are (generally) unfunny trash. The Free LP forum isn't much better.

The best LP's are chronicled on the Let's Play Archive and have their origins in the LP sub-forum on Something Awful.

I think this is the most accurate response. Youtube hosts advertising as a means of revenue, so I wouldn't be surprised if Square Enix bought a lot of that advertising.

Simple solution is to stop supporting them.

^^ Pretty much this. There hasn't been a good Final Fantasy game since number 7.

Aw I liked 9. :(

There's people who like civ4 and that still doesn't make it a good game.

I don't like Let's Plays but I think people should be allowed to see them. It's not as if you're somehow allowing other people to play the game.

I wouldn't wish such a punishment upon anyone. :(
