After all this time of playing - I realized a simple help in the game. Have you ever noticed some units have white bars underneath the health bar? This is stack size. It will show up to 8 units.

This can help when deciding when to attack, and how.

You can also right click any square other than an opponents city and see exact info on all of the units there. When right clicking an opponents city you only see 1 unit - their best defender.
