stAMNES: Never Ending Story

From: Zululand
To: Kenya

What is the meaning of this?!? You shall pay for this!!

ORDERS *Secret*
-The map is important.
-Divide our army into two somewhat unequal parts: a northern force and a southern force. The southern force will be the smaller of the two, and will include all of our conscript troops and some of our others. It will attack the Kenyan spearhead into our territory, as shown by the blue arrows. The northern force will be the larger, making up the rest of the army. It will counterattack onto Kenyan soil in an effort to scare the Kenyans and hopefully cut off their invasion force.

To Etruria
From Mediterranea
*Secret*

We need your final decision on your participation in the war against Carthage as soon as possible. Please give us a final, unequivocal decision.

Story

News reached the mainland of a disaster in the Atlantic. While ships searching for the legendary "Azores" and "Cape Verde" Islands had found them and established settlements, the ships had been pulled off course on the return home and all but one ship was destroyed. Perhaps the ventures into the unruly ocean had not been a wise decision. Now Mediterranea must struggle with the chore of rebuilding its once-glorious navy.

"Have we heard anything from the colonists on the islands at all?"

"Not a word. I fear that any boats they may build on the islands could not reach the African shore. Unless we send another fleet, we will lose contact with the islands altogether."

"Assemble another fleet, then, and set sail for the islands. Be wary of the dangers of the sea, however, and turn back rather than risk the ships in a dangerous venture. The islands are not of such great use to us as our fleet."

Meanwhile, the Empress had met with the King of Babylon at Knossos on Mediterranean-controlled Crete. A agreement had been reached -- Mediterranea would cede control of its Anatolian territories to Babylon in exchange for Babylonian aid against the nation of Carthage. Currently, Mediterranean and Babylonian troops waited, hidden, on the borders of Carthage, ready to attack at the signal.

To all Players
From The Mod

Hey guys. Game is going well, though I have to mention a couple things...

This is a story nes. Where we write stories for our nations, and adventures and tales of our struggle, power, pride and all that. I understand if you dont have time to write stories, its alright, but you can even put extra effort in your orders. For example, if you are upgrading your economy, dont just say "Increase Economy". How are you going to do this? How are you going to gain more money for the government so you can spend it on other things? Be creative. That is what a nes is all about. The more I know about your nation, the better I can make random events, and even good random events. Even for education increase, and army increase, and all that, be a leader, state how you will do these things, becuase historically, they didn;t just pop up. If you increase army, how will you do this? Stuff like that.

Anyways, I hope my pointers and suggestions helped. :)

We said we'd attack once you had their attention -- our forces have tried before to defeat the Kyotans head-on and it failed time and time again, so we aren't going to recklessly rush in when half their army is there and fortified. The moment they begin shipping troops over, we strike. Until then, we must remain dormant towards them, otherwise the attack will be ineffective. Patience is a virtue...

To Babylon
From Mediterranea *Secret*

While the loss of many of our ships has harmed our economy somewhat by forcing the fast creation of new ships, we are nonetheless ready to launch our invasion of Carthage. Below are is a map marking the paths of the invasion. Are these all agreed? Black marks Babylonian troops, white marks Mediterranean. The lines between squares mark temporary naval blockades. While Mediterranea will be able to provide some troops for the assault on Greece, we will be relying heavily on Babylonian support, as Mediterranea has two other fronts to fight on as well.

To the Roman People
From Mediterranea *Secret*

While Carthage has long ruled over your nation, be sure that this tyrrany is over! Mediterranea has come to free your nation. Will you rise up against your Carthaginian overmasters and aid the invasion?

Zululand was in turmoil. The sudden assault by the Kenyans had taken them by surprise and done much damage. Now was the time for retribution. The Zulus would neither forgive the Kenyans, nor would they let them continue to exist. This was a conflict where the Zulus must crush or be crushed.

The plan was simple. While one group would distract the Kenyan invaders by counterattacking their spearhead, the Zulu main force would sneak behind them and attack Kenya itself. The Kenyans would be forced to respond in one of two ways; either to pull back their invading troops to counter the new threat, or to continue their aggression while leaving their homeland wide open. Either way, the ultimate fate of Kenya was sealed.

*****

Mbongo, commander of the defensive force, watched as the Kenyan troops drew up for the battle. This is it, he thought. This is my chance to destroy the invaders. The battle we fight here today will determine the fate of our nation.

The chances were rougly even for either side, though the scale might have been tipping a little towards the Zulu end. True, the Zulus were outnumbered, but only by so much. Plus, their weapons and tactics were superior. The Zulu warriors were each equipped with one stabbing assegai (spear) as well as a small bronze blade for close combat--not much less or more than the average African warrior. However, the Zulu secret was this: in addition to these weapons, the Zulu warriors carried 5-7 javelins each, and special units carried even more.

Mbongo gave the order to charge. The Zulu forces began advancing at a full run towards the Kenyan lines, yelling to highten their combat readiness and intimidate their enemy. The opposing lines braced to receive a full-on spear charge.

Then a surprising thing happened--the assault stopped short. Within yards of the enemy, the Zulu charge had gone from a flat-out sprint to a dead stop. Many Kenyan soldiers were so impressed with such a feat, along with the control the leaders had over their troops to accomplish it, that they lowered their weapons and shield and watched.

Which was to be the last mistake many of them would make. "Hurl the javelins!" the command came, and the Zulu line acted in unison. Javelins filled the air for a brief second, then returned to earth, most hitting their marks and disabling (if not killing outright) many Kenyans.

Then the Zulu flanks slowly began to advance and spread as the center fired another round of javelins. The Zulus were forming their classic double-echelon formation known as "the bull's horns." A third volley of javelins, then the charge began anew.

The Zulu's rougly crescent formation would now prove its effectiveness in combat. While the "horns" flanked the enemy to cause the most damage possible to their rear wth the rest of their javelins, the densely-packed "crown" slammed into the lines at a full charge, causing the Kenyans to buckle, but not break. Already the Kenyans were beginning to litter the field. However, they fought more fiercely than the Zulus had expected, and the Zulu army was starting to take heavy casualties of its own.

Mbongo was in the thick of the fighting. He wielded his assegai with the grace of a true master of the art, sometimes sweeping this way to catch an enemy in mid-lunge, sometimes twirling it that way to prepare for a thrust which would take out some of the target's vital organs. The wiser Kenyan warriors backed away from this man, and the more foolish ones soon found out why they should have. Soon, he was able to enjoy something rare in the midst of a battle--a quick break.

He took advantage of this to look around the battlefield. His warriors were fighting admirably, but the Kenyan line had not broken yet. It would take a little more to do that, but the time was getting short, as the sun would soon set. There was only one thing left to do.

Mbongo charged into the thickest part of the battle like a fury. The impact of his spear was so hard that it went through the enemy it hit, skewering him with the man behind him. It also caused the handle to break. Mbongo rapped the splintered staff across the face of an attacker to stun him, then discarded it and drew his short sword. He then began hacking away at the enemy, blinded by pure, unfettered rage. Already some Kenyans were running at the mere sight of this man. He only hoped that his action could turn the tide of this battle, but this was only in the back of his mind, as his foremost and dominating thought was to slaughter all the Kenyans before him with his own hands.

Manchuria

The recovery from the millenium-long Mongolian War was now proceeding nicely. The Manchurian economy was beginning to rebound from it's all time low. Progress on the Victory Obleisk had reached 20%, and work was still progressing on schedule. New lands were being explored and settled to the north, and although much of the land is too cool for large-scale agriculture, the lands do provide plenty of raw materials, including lumber and minerals. Also, the relationship between Manchuria and the rest of the world was growing. Diplomatic contacts had been established with nations to the west, southwest, and west, although official treaties had been signed only with the Chinese and the Sri Lankans. Manchuria's economy, though improving, was still worse than those of many other nations. Manchuria still has much work to do until recovery from the war is complete...

ORDERS
-Continue work on the Victory Obleisk.
-Improve the economy by extending the earlier built Manchurian-Mongolian road system northward, as to open the northern frontier to increased colonization and economic exploitation of natural resources.
-Use 2/5 of the army to expand northward along the Lena River, 2/5 to expand northward along the Pacific coastline, and have the other 1/5 to guard the homelands.
