Star Trek mod - The Next Generation!

OK, I included the missing cityscreen buttons in my interface thread. Just replace the ones in the cityscreen folder...

Basically you are supposed to mess around with the different civ, start wars between them and take over their colonies in no time. It's a quick conquest without a challenge... In the last version I gave them teleport ability to go back to the Continuum again. But I guess the Q have too many abilities to be played well by the AI...

I did that. The Vulcans never made first contact with Earth......

Changing history can be fun... :D
Any remarks on the gameplay?

Hey... first of all this is a wicked mod flamand... I dont normally emerge from my lurking much but the thought of a full on star trek mod brings me back to the good oldl BoF days.

Here are a few comments from the first couple of turns
There are "Coast" squares around alpha centauri
population in the city box tends to black out the area behind it if you hover over

so far i am still playing... will post more as it becomes apparent
great job!

OK... Heres some more updates on the early game

no free techs to start makes it hard to build anything but federation ground 1
the civilopedia for vulcans is dilithium? lots of civilpedia stuff probably still has to be done
how do you build colonists? seems to not have a tech required, but I cant build them in Sol (Which should probably be renamed Earth in my opinion since the colony is on the planet not the system?)
is there any way to use star trek music instead? the civ3 track just doesnt go well at all with this
biosphere civilopedia says it allows cities to grow past 2... but alpha centauri doesnt have one and cant even get past 1

the look and feel of the game is awesome.

I haven't played enough to really make a comment...

Although if someone has the time could they change the civilopedia graphics look. Something like a pad, but with the grey around the screens and not just the screen look...

just a thought....

Unless Flamand made more changes than I can see, there should be a small wonder available to all civs. This wonder auto-builds colonists every 20 turns or so. It was originally put it in to assume that most colonists come from the home planet.

YES. If you have the music on MP3 you can replace the civ3 music. Just look for the mp3 files in the Civilization III directory. Create an identical directory structure within the StarTrek Scenario. Rename your StarTrek MP3's to the same names as what are in the Civ3 folder. DO NOT overwrite your orginal civ3 music, unless you make backups and want ST music in ALL games.

It is hard to get the cities to grow. Biosphere is the equivalent to an aqueduct. You will find if you play the map over and over or just look really carefully and you will see where the "fresh water" sites are at. Look at the solar systems. If your "ground" units can walk around a space tile, then that tile is a "fresh water" tile and should have a colony planted next to it if possible. Note suns are "mountains and volcanoes" so if you can't walk comletely around a space tile because of the sun, it should still be a "fresh water" tile......

@Wenamon:
* I don't know about any coast squares, they should be solar system...
* The black squares thing is a bug I cannot fix (see post 1)
* The 'Sol' tag is meant for the Sun, some stars have tags. Earth is the name of the colony, which is the city tag.
* The Civilopedia is very incomplete, so the functions of the different improvements were included in a couple of word documents in the Star Trek folder. Civilopedia writing is not my forte, but I will make it a priority.
* I did not include any music as that would take a lot of memory space (typically about 100Mb) and I think the Trek themes are copyrighted...
* The biosphere requires titanium (a grey cylindrical shape, found in the system to the right of Earth). Better take a terraformer together with you, otherwise you have no way of mining it... Maybe that should be changed in the next version of the map.
* In the beginning you need to connect the two resources (antimatter on Jupiter and the colonists on Mars) to Earth and you can make the Colonization program which gives you 1 colonist unit every 5 turns (this was increased tocompensate for the large map size). Minor races have the Alien homeworld which produces one every 20 turns.

@Tzar Sasha: great idea about the pad. I'll try to give it a shot... Do you feel like helping me in developing the mod further? I really could use an equal partner in this and since you are one of the original developers it would be great...

@DrZoidberg: thanks for noticing, I'm uploading it back to yousendit as a temporary measure. I'll PM Thunderfall to ask if he has some space for it on his servers. EDIT: fixedthe link just now. It should work fine for another 15-20 downloads or so...

I can't make any promises to you. I was just a backseat burner so to speak. I attempted to make a few units and do some graphics. I gave a few inputs on gameplay, ideas and stuff, but I wouldn't say I was one of the original developers, just one of those original enthusiasts.... I'll continue to help as I can, but again I make no promises.....

Original enthousiasts are also welcome... :) Do you think you have time to make one last Borg unit? The Diamond is still missing and you did a wonderful job on the other Borg units...

I don't know....
I scraped the program I was using.
I can get it back as it was an open source program.
I'm just not sure if I still have the models.

I've got a project I'm supposed to do for the Wheel of Time Mod.
IF I get that done, I'll consider revisiting the Borg units. But I will not REDO any unit already done.

It would be easiest to make a non-animated place holder Diamond until it could be replaced with an animated one, but that really is more work in the long run....

No need to redo any of your units, I like them just the way they are... In a next version the Tactical Sphere should be included as well I think... Why was it never used? Because it was never on the show?

Actually, it was not included because it was finished after the last posting of version 0.7 Also it was not on the show. For the most part we had wanted things to remain accurate. However, I don't see why the Borg would not have a tacticle sphere. I even saw a concept drawing from one of the shows artists for a pyramid ship. It was a little bit of a joke really.

sphere, pyramid, cube aka UPN

Just as long as there is no icosahedron... :) Just wondering if the Borg designers know this site. Plenty of designs to choose from... :D

Well, I guess I can scrap what I've already done for it.....
and I had 23 of the 32 sides done.

:D
Somebody has to stop the Borg Queen's ambitions... :)

Here's my little to do list:

* Update civilopedia and pedia icons (doing that right now)
* Leaderhead graphics: about 15 new ones need to be created. Does anyone know a website where the different symbols of the species can be found?
* Units, units, units...
* Diplomacy texts.

Any suggestions for the diplomacy? What would each species say in the different situations?

Well I downloaded this mod last night and played about 20 turns of the large map with all the minors. I thought I'd briefly comment on the experience so far.

I understand that this is a work in progress but let me say that the attention to detail is terrific! You put a lot of time into this mod and it shows. Great work so far, can't wait to see how the mod evovles. :goodjob:

I have experience no bugs during 20 game turns and that is excellent. With all the rules one must keep track of I saw no crashes due to missing entries in the civilopedia or other text files.

I love the interface. It gives the game a whole new flavor. I'm usually a star wars fan but you have my interest here!! ;)
