Star Trek mod - The Next Generation!

Thats weird, suddenly this Mod gets attention. When I was working on it noone seemed interested and I got near to zero feedback.

Perhaps I should make myself clear: this is a continuation, not a replacement. And I apologize if I implied that. I don't want to pretend to be the author of this great mod, that's Glorfinder and Kenta'arka together with yourself and quite a few other great people...

You may work on it, but please give Glorfinder and me credit for all the stuff we did for the mod, and make clear you just finish our work...

btw: Not posting isn't the same as not visiting the forum (at least in my case, Glorfinder seems to be gone...)

I have changed the name of the first post to give more credit to the starters of this mod. Now it is called "Star Trek mod - The Glorfinder/Kenta'arka project continued!" Hopefully the name of the thread will change with it... Otherwise I will have to PM Thunderfall to do it.

hey flamand, thanks for the response. I noticed those coast tiles in the smaller map. But I now realise that most everyone is playing the big map, but for me thats just too much time between turns.

I will continue to play and let you know if I find any bugs.
Great job!

ok...
I have been playing the small map for some time now and I have found it to be inadequate. I am guessing this is not the map everyone else is using?
I find the large map difficult because I am guessing there will be a long wait between turns. Is this the case?

Frankly I haven't tried to play the small map because I thought it was ok already. I will take a look at it when I get the chance. Can you tell me what the problem is?
The wait between turns for the large map depends on your computer. For me it's about 20-30 sec on a PIV 2.83MHz computer.

I have a game going with the large map and find that the wait time between turns for me is about 30-40 seconds. I'm running windows xp on a 1.6ghz rig with 512mb of ram.

I also have a game going with the small map and I think it is just as much fun as the big map is. You definately find the other civs faster than the big map but not too fast. I think this is a good map for those who don't want big wait times between turns.

I do have a question though. Why is it that I can't build any colony ships and what structure is needed to get a planet's pop to grow beyond size 1!

edit: forgot to mention I'm playing as the Klingon's on both the small map and the large map.

For colonists you need to build the Colonization program, which requires both antimatter (grey rectangle) and colonists (settler icon from standard game). Every playable civ should have those resources in it's homesystem. Just connect them to you colony using the terraformer.
The Biodome is the replacement of the aquaduct and it requires titanium (grey bar). For this resource you need to look around a bit, but it can't be too far...

Thanks for the reply. I'm not sure but I don't think I remember seeing the colonists resource near the Klingon homeworld on the small map biq. I will verify tonight when I get home and let you know.

The large map has the resources for the Klingon's and I'm about 8 turns away from completing the Colonization program. (Now I know what the Colonization program does! ;) )

Yup, you're right... I have forgotten to put the colonists... :spank:
Here they are...

Hey Flamand,
some of the problems I have noticed with the small map are below
- the lack of colonists pointed out above (corrected in the new map... great!)
- placement of the empires (vulcan right next to cardassia, could be moved closer to feds and put bajor in next to cardassia with a wormhole)
- expansion room (cardassians could use some systems to their south, feds to their immediate south, roms to their north, and klings need some as well)
- minor civs could be added to more systems (esp if u consider adding more systems in general)
- earth has no moon (minor comment I know, but what about New Berlin!?!)

Large map
so I have played through the Enterprise age and have a few comments here as well based on the save file attached.
- I think that colonist every five turns is good (better than 20)
- I find that the Xindi are WAY too powerful at this point of the game (their culture dwarfs the other civs)
- trade posts should come earlier (it takes a long time to build biospheres just because you are waiting around to connect the dilithium from Alpha Centauri)
- other than those comments the game is playing great (albeit slow but faster than i expected likely due to the lack of settling space)

I am just noticing something else as well flamand, it seems that colonizing an M class planet brings its food down from 6 to 1. Why? this effect doesnt occur if you colonize a planet with an M class planet in its radius.

That's a feature/limitation of the game engine. Food production in the city square is always exactly enough for one population point.

For the ST mod, this leads to the paradoxical situation that it's better to avoid settling the best/most fertile planets. Instead you're better off if you settle some desert hellhole in the neighborhood! :crazyeye:

another comment on the small map, I just lost an NX class vessel in Space terrain, despite the fact that my valiant class vessels can travel anywhere.
Also, NX class has less movement than valiant? is this because valiant is more scout ship type?

Perhaps the Xindi are a bit too strong culturally, but there is no cultural victory anyway. This is a way to avoid that they are assimilated before the 25th century... :D
As far as the titanium on Alpha Centauri is concerned: this is on purpose so the grow is slow in the beginning forthe Federation. The others already have a couple of colonies and early titanium because they werestronger in ENT era and theAI hasa hard time finding it's resources...
For crossing space you will need astrometry, for nebula you need space navigation (or is it the other way around?). Scout and transport class ships can cross it immediately. In the space lanes map you can only cross space in the TOS era.
And the small map is kept the way it was in version 0.7: incorrect in terms trek geography but playable as the civ's are well spread over the map.

Otherwise: feel free to make a new map (or better: a scenario) yourself and share it with everyone... :D

Hey Flamand,
I thought I would try to take up your challenge. Added some things to the small map, let me know what you think!

Edit: I should say what I added:
More star systems
Orions
Bajorans
Betazed
and Bolians

Hopefully this doesnt unbalance the game too much

edit: See attachment in next comment.

Not bad, but you have to be careful with the planets in the end of the list (Ocean, swamp,...) because they tend to get parts of other planets. When putting planets you always need to try a couple of positions before it's right.
Apart from that, it seems like a nice map to me. :)

Perhaps you can try an entirily new map? I was thinking about a couple of scenarios with what is been availble already. Perhaps Wolf 359, the Romulan war, the Dominion war, etc...

although I would love to make a dominion scenario (a la the old civ 2 one)... I am afriad that my scenario making skills are lacking (it took me 30 mins just to learn how to put in cities for that map :D

I will see if I get anywhere with it...

ps - yeah i thought those planets looked graphically weird but I figured it would just fix itself during the game.

EDIT: fixed wonky looking planets.
