OK blackhand, i'm a moron when it comes to programming, but i can make units, so i'm sure you can too.
Programs you will need:
- Open FX
- aaaaaany file that opens gifs
-Flicster [or steph's program]
steps to make space unit (heh, they're so easy even i can do them)
1. Open 3DS model up in [open FX] 'designer'. Make sure the model is sensible (as in all in one piece). Set some random spots on the top to a dark blue colour (for civ colours) by deselecting all vertices (ctrl + D), and carefully selecting the part you want civ-coloured and change colour to blue and remove all maps from it.
2. (a smaller step) - save 3DS as a .MFX
3. You will need the 'template' for unit design - and this is available on
http://forums.civfanatics.com/showpost.php?p=1720533&postcount=9 from morpheus.
4. Open template, and add new actor (your .mfx). You can make it wobble if you like, or something, so its not just stationary and boring, and thats vaguely explained here;
http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=84833
5. Once down you will have to export - click on render, and select 'animation', 'flc', and choose where you want it to go, and choose a size which is about 300 x 200 pixels
6. Use flc to gif to convert the flc into X number of gif images. Open up an existing flc in flicster, and resize it to be the same as what you've jsut made. Now open up all the gifs and copy and paste them into the right row in order (one on the left, last on the right).
7. Now go back to open FX, and choose a different camera angle, and repeat the whole process.

That does the default nimation, i can;t do death anims yet (too complicated :$) but for attack anims, you can either make the ship rock a bit, or move back a bit when the lasers come out or something, but otherwise you can just copy and paste one of the frames from the default anim many times.

attack anim
basically what i did for mine, was get the B-Wing and A-Wing models [chris85 and.....someone else, sorry can't remember who] and use the laser shots from these two ships, playing about with them a bit, so that a little stream of shots come out from wherever the gun explacements may be. And there you have almost all of a new unit. Takes less than a day to get a relatively decent job, and you don't have to worry about palletes because the existing civ unit already had them.
