If you remember the story, Stardock promised to make Master of Magic 2 (full story on http://www.masterofmagic2.com/, if you're interested) but in the end they weren't able to buy a license under acceptable conditions. Since then, the concept was evolved - The 2009 project is a creation of Stardock's own, and had already been unveiled in their 2007 interview with Gamasutra as a "part Master of Magic, part Populous and part X-Com" game.

Shack: So how is work progressing on Stardock's fantasy/strategy game?

Brad Wardell: That's the one most of our developers are on. It's pretty far along, it's actually been in development for a while. We have two people working on Demigod right now, actually three if you count network. But the rest of the development team is on the fantasy strategy game.

Shack: Can you talk about it at all?

Brad Wardell: Sure. We're going to be formally announcing it--the team promises me in November, which means I can't promise that. But it's a turn-based fantasy strategy game. It's essentially--imagine Civilization with magic, in terms of general, broad play style. I mean, it's a lot more than that, because I'm a Civ fanatic--no pun intended, great site--but there's a really good mod for Civilization IV that lets you do magic and stuff. Obviously it's a lot more than just Civ with magic.

It has tactical battles. It has multiplayer. Modding is integrated into the game. I mean users can actually submit--I wish we had gotten this game out sooner, because it's going to seem like a Spore rip-off. I mean you can literally add in your own stuff--it goes into the game universe.

Shack: Spore didn't exactly invent that concept.

Brad Wardell: Yeah, but people are gonna say it's Spore-like, which I guess is good because it explains it. I mean people have already started talking about the Impulse store like it's the Apple app-store for Windows. But we're like, "Urggh, but we had it first." But in five years the Apple people will be saying how we ripped them off.

Shack: So November then?

Brad Wardell: That's when we should be announcing. It won't be out. The beta will start early next year, probably in the spring. And then it will come out basically when we're all happy with it. And it's going to be a public beta, so it's essentially [going to be released] when everyone thinks it's really good.

Can't wait! I like GC2 but I've never been into space stuff. Now that they are doing another TBS game with fantasy units, I'm hyped.

From the Demigod website:
Demigod is a real-time, tactical strategy game
Hmm...doesn't look like it is going to be like a GC2 fantasy but a Sins of a Solar Empire fantasy. Not TBS but RTS.

I am pretty sure this is seperate from Demigod due to this line:

We have two people working on Demigod right now, actually three if you count network. But the rest of the development team is on the fantasy strategy game.

Sounds pretty awesome, like it might be worth buying into the beta. Strong feelings that Spore won't be worth expansions, at any rates.

It has tactical battles. It has multiplayer. Modding is integrated into the game. I mean users can actually submit--I wish we had gotten this game out sooner, because it's going to seem like a Spore rip-off. I mean you can literally add in your own stuff--it goes into the game universe.

Stardock just announced the actual title: Elemental: War of Magic (www.elementalgame.com)

$50 to buy into the beta next Spring.

Yeah it does look like AoW, but on cell shader.

Supposedly there will be in-game modding, somewhat like Spore, though maybe somewhat more like Galatic Civilizations 2....who knows what it will be like.

It's not going to enter beta until next year, and the beta testers will probably have 9+ months to help guide development.

do we know anything about it? how customizable is it?

Here's a snippit of the article at GameSpy--

"Elemental will also mark Stardock's entry into the realm of Spore-style game broadcasting. The game will do much more than offer support for modders, as the company is developing a back-end infrastructure through its proprietary Impulse service that will let players seamlessly integrate new races, units, spells, technologies, buildings and much more into their game. Every time a player starts a game of Elemental, they'll have the opportunity to seamlessly incorporate new content straight from the fertile minds of the game's biggest fans."

Wow, that looks pretty good. This is likely a must buy for me.

They're basically just place-holder graphics Scampi. Those are alpha graphics at this point. I'm more curious if they can actually make the game play fresh, since really MoM has been almost beaten to death, in a generic way.

One of the freelance artists for Stardock hangs out in our chat room. I am sure there are some things he can discuss about the game! I can tell you that Brad is very big about making sure the games are Moddable, and a lot of the stuff they are experimenting in this game they will hope to implement further in their MMO

Check out the news on Impulsedriven.com and the elemental homepage. Mr. Wardell is putting up designer notes now again.
