But I do know there's a pseudo-random number generator in the game that throws the dice when it sets up the game and later whenever a fihgt occurs or a civ chooses to go to war and so on. The sequence of numbers is not really random, it just looks that way and that's why it's called pseudo-random. By starting off at a different point in the sequence you can create a different set of numbers ad different choices about the random elements of the game. There's an option called "Preserve Random Seed" which ensures that the game always uses the same sequence. If you switch this option off in your game setup then you might get a different set of start locations.
