Have played for days with no crashes.
Never used the "tactical layer"

Used the tactical layer in the game I am playing and ever since I randomly crash to desktop

I removed the label but still crash randomly
Fresh reboot and restart still crashes to desktop in game
I try to spread religion with a christian missionary and every time it crashes to desktop
Set all settings to low
animations off
effects off

Is this only happening for the saved game you used the tactical layer on? If so, feel free to post your save... I'll see if it crashes on my system too. If it is crashing not just in the save, but in new games too, try reinstalling Civ 4, that should clear out the problem. Or maybe this could be fixed by clearing the cache (see this)... but I don't know much about this option...

I will try that cache clearing tonight and also ypload the save. I haven't tried a new game yet. But it does seemt o me that since I had no problems untilt his game it is probably a game specific issue. Thanks!

Same for me Worked for a couple of days then "blam" desktop on every try to build a city.

Same for me. Worked for 2 days. Then started crashing like crazy. Un-installed/re-installed. No change. Play for 20 minutes (new game), crash. And not just crash to desktop, crash system. Takes 2 or 3 re-boots to get back up.
I fiddled around some more, trying the various "fixes", and now I can't even get the game to start. Just wonderful.

How's the patch coming along? That's what I thought. Back to CIVIII for a couple of months I guess.

Have either of you tried deleting the hidden cache folde as described in the link above? I can't try until I get home.

I had no hidden (or otherwise) Cache folder.

One thing I did notice after one of my crashes was that the "_Config" file was EMPTY. That was after one of the more recent crashes.

clearing the cache folder in the documents and settings folder fixed it...Thanks!

Note for readers this is not the my documents folder where you would find the cache folder it is inside documents and settings... see the above thread.

I found clearing the cache to help greatly with my crashes. I was able to play for over 8 hours without a crash. Here's the kicker. I closed the game, and cam e back to it an hour or so later, and it wasn't long before a crash. So I went back in and cleared out the cache again before I started another game. Once again, it worked like a charm for about 2 hours. So I think if you clear the game cache before every play, while a pain in the butt, may help greatly with the crash problem.
