Getting this wonder is pretty random: It's cheap, but you have to have ivory. Start near ivory, and you can probably get to it first if you aren't playing on some insane level. Start far away from ivory and you're just plain out of luck.

But should you get it....Whoa. Ancient Cavalry is a force to be reckoned with. Especially once you build a barracks. They come out of the blocks with 5 hit points! Plus nasty stats and fast movement. It's quite sick just how powerful these guys can be.

Be careful though. I think they've upped the costs for keeping an army in Republic, and you DO pay support for these guys. They can end up costing you a pretty penny if you just let them stack up. So go kill things! Man are they good at it!

Can't agree more...especially in a game where technological progress is slow (for an all human game at Deity) where Ancient Cavalry will be relevant for a LONG, LONG time ;)

I managed to get my hands on Ivory a little too late in my current game. :(

I was really looking foward to trying this wonder out...

I got the ToZ in my first EG, as the Hittites, missed the ToA (Artemis) by 4 turns. :( Shortly after, the Inca DOWed me, and it was lights out. Each time I thought my advancement was stalling, a freach ancient cavalry unit would come trotting out of my capital. Very nice! I believe all ancient cav units are veteran, whether there is a barracks or not in the city which built the ToZ.

What does DOW mean?

And Ancient Cavalry have a 1HP bonus.

DOW = Declaration of War; used more at the Paradox forums for EU2 and HOI.

I might be a real pain in the ass, but this is like the third thread about "Zues" (time after time). His name is "Zeus".

I'm actually building this wonder anyway in my Aztec game. I planning a Knight war against whoever is close to me, and I realized that free 3 attack units couldn't hurt, could they? They may not be that effective, but 3 attack +1hp would actually do some damage to Pikes.

I'm worried about Zeus and the Knights Templar GW. These can be a terrible threat at higher level games and will certainly either require immediate control/destruction or give an AI civ control of the far off continent depending on how close they are to the player.

My first game of C3C was at chieftain because I was just goofing off. The ancient cavalry is both strong and fast -- heck they'll be usefull units to almost the modern age. The knights are 5 attack strength so even though they're not fast units they'll make great garrison units until late in the game too.

No, they'll start out as regulars if you don't have a Rax, but since they have +1 hp, they look like veterans. If you have a Rax, they come out with 5 HP! And boy oh boy are they beasties then....

Egads. You're right.

I am ashamed.

One thing I really like about the Statue Of Zeus is that if you get the chance to build it, you don't have to rush because chances that someone else is building it in the word are low. :)

Very true, which can be a real stroke of luck (re: vicinity to ivory), especially on emperor or above.

I think Statue of Zeus is balanced. My only problem with it is that you need Ivory, which makes it a pretty random wonder.

However, I don't think the Ancient Cavs are so good as to be unbalancing. After all, they only come once every 5 turns, and if they are in combat regularly, you should be able to kill them in 5 turns before a new one appears. (Remember, they have 2 defense, so a Sword can probably take them out.)

My first game getting it, I also got the Knights Templar. I love those guys. Mmm I smell domination victory.

I'm glad they added in the requirment of possessing ivory in order to build it, to make it more random and difficult to acquire, otherwise it would be way overpowered.

I was lucky and was able to build Temple of Zeus in my first game, Standard map 8 civs archipelago, as the Sumerians. I've never seen such a large army in the ancient era before - I usually never build catapults, but I have a couple decorating the landscape of Egpyt right about now. I'm currently in a revolution, moving onto a feudal government. I can't wait to see how that works out...

Truly, Conquests has erased the stain left by Play the World.

For those of you who have built it, does it produce units during anarchy? I know the Knight's Templar does.

They should make Ivory spread out through the world more then the other Luxaries.

Luck should not be such a big factor in this, possible, game breaking wonder.

IIRC, it does. I'm pretty sure I continued to get them during a 9 turn anarchy I suffered.
