I noticed recently that stealing technology from an AI civ gave me a tech that increased my Harmony affinity. When I checked the AI civ in the diplomacy tab, they had level 4 in Supremacy, and level 0 in Harmony. Something's fishy here. When I steal a tech from the AI, am I actually copying their technology, or just getting something at random from the tech tree?

So far as I know the technology is one that the other faction already has, and you have yet to research it. But it is available for for you to research.

I interpret it to mean that the other faction has researched it and you don't have it yet.

And I don't think it's unheard of to research a tech not affiliated with your particular affinity. For example, I've researched a tech that was in Supremecy but I was going Harmony, but I didn't get a level of Supremacy.

That's what I would have assumed, but the civ that I got the tech from had no points in Harmony, despite my gaining two levels of Harmony upon receiving the tech.

Is it possible they got just below 1 but you already had some points and therefore got exactly to 2?

You don't receive affinity levels for researching techs. You receive affinity points and it's possible that you already had some whereas the AI hadn't even though you both appear to be level 0 Harmony. You might already have accrued some from a quest decision.

And, yes, when you steal, you get a random tech from them that you have not researched yourself.

Makes total sense :crazyeye:
From what I've seen in the code so far I think it's save to assume the developers enjoy going down the "As long as it's not TOO obvious we're fine with doing it the easy way."-route.

You do receive affinity xp from research some tech. . .

Having just looked at the code, the possible tech pulled comes from what the player can research, not what the opponent has researched.

Make sense if terms of balance, since you could waste 18 turns for a 2 turn tech, but definitly makes 0 sense in term of logic & description!

Would prefer that stealing turns was scaled with the level of intrigue and was a random already discovered tech.

edit: Nevermind!

Or make it like in Civ 5 BNW did. You get to choose which tech you want to steal if the agent success.

Thanks for the advice, Ryiga :) :)

I'd say that'd make it very strong FreedomFighter. Covert Operations are already pretty strong. That said, Steal Science is at the moment probably more useful than Steal Tech, so maybe your suggestion would be worth it.

I'd say even more. Each tech gives fixed amount of affinity points, but the cost of affinity level in points depends on levels you already got (in all affinities). So, if you have high Supremacy, for example, early Harmony tech could be not enough for you to get a full Harmony level. Just a side note.

No it doesn't,

The amount of points required to go up 1 level in an affinity depends on
1. What level That affinity is (ie 2->3 costs more than 0->1)
2. If it is your highest affinity or not (at levels above 4, gaining a level in your highest affinity is cheaper than for non highest affinity)

As mentioned before Stealing is apparently bugged... it is just a free random tech that you can research. (nothing whatsoever to do with the other player)

I would still steal tech since in mid-game; my tech is abundant that almost every tech can be research within 20 turn (Epic Speed). Steal science seem to increase your current tech research by % amount, so if you like to macro, switch you tech research to the most expensive one before the spy finish steal science op. Steal tech would give me rapidly tech gain since i timed all spy to work and finish in the same time. Easier to handle and manage that way

Yes, it went like that. Your dominate affinity will require normal xp to lv it up, but the other 2 will require more than normal. 0>1 require 12 in my game, but if it is not dominate affinity, it will require 16 instead.

I wasn't going to do that because it's clearly an exploit but then one time I was researching a 3 turn tech and got 80 science from covert ops. Eff dat! I reloaded and got 800 for a different tech.

This sucks. I was specifically choosing to steal tech from purity players when I'm supremacy so I can possibly get augmentation from them. It has a supremacy building but other than that it is a dead end for supremacy so I don't want to throw science into it myself
