Steam DRM and suddenly malfunctioning CD burners?

I recently purchased a game off of Steam (Europa Universalis 3, if it matters). A few days later, my CD-R/DVD-ROM drive on my laptop wouldn't read any discs any more.

It's been a month or two since I tried to use my CD drive, so it could be other problems. However, I've heard that some DRM programs disable a computer's ability to access CD drives that have "burner" capability.

If this is what happened, if Steam's DRM is doing that, how do I fix it?

I'd REALLY like to play Civ IV, dang it! :-)

A lot of people on CFC use Steam, and I've never heard of this problem before.

Steam's DRM does nothing of the sort.

Steam's DRM includes contacting their servers and having your games tied to an account. There are no drivers installed that could affect your disc reader.

Dang. It was the most obvious change I'd made over the last couple of months...

Oh well, I've still got 2 months on my Dell warranty, I'll force them to help me figure out how to fix it. :-)

if it was any DRM it was probly securom.
