Steamdb: Feb 13th - Civ 6 active players: 33734 vs Civ 7 active players: 34972

It is also worth noting that the number of active players of Civ 7 did not increase much after the formal release.

("rel" means the release date)

Which suggests that most of the players playing right now are still pre-order players rather than base version players (and by extension, most of the discussions about the game are still dominated by pre-order players).

The larger player base hasn't kicked in just yet, and for every Civ game, it would always take a fairly long time - usually years - before the new game to overtake the old.

I think we can also consider the pre-order players who quit or refunded. Anyway it shows one of both possibilities:

1. Almost of early players already pre-ordered, and large part of pre-order players decided to keep going with Civ 7.

2. Maybe some of pre-ordered players quit playing, but standard players filled the population.

It do not show the potential players waiting solid reviews, so this can't be the final conclusion.

In addition to this, I think we have to wait for the weekend to see whether we get a new peak. I assume most people that were very eager to play as soon as possible bought an early access edition. Hence, the Tuesday release didn't come with a big swing - only the players that wanted to play as fast as possible but did not (or could not) get early access. It doesn't include the "Oh, the Guardian said there's a new civ game. I'll get that." crowd yet. I don't think we'll see 6's release peak replicated, but I could imagine 10k-20k more than we had at release.
