Update 4- 1240 AD
Italy
Venice- The Venetian offensive has come at long last. Swarming across the Holy Roman Empires border with the Kingdom of Sicily, Venetian troops have launched a concerted attack on central Italy. The attack was both successful and highly costly, as the Sicilian troops along the HRE border were only overrun after inflicting heavy losses on the advancing Venetians. In all their battles, from the HRE border to the Battle of Taranto (see below), the Venetians have made use of a strange new vehicle called a Carroccio, somewhat like a mechanized version of the ancient Roman standard bearer. A wooden wagon flying a great standard emblazoned with the holy Crucifix, the Carroccio rallies the pious Venetian on during battle, and discourages the Sicilians, especially those who are sensitive to the fact that they fight for an excommunicated King.
Sicily- While the Venetians have advanced in the north, Sicilian knights by the King himself have continued their southern invasion of Venetian Italy. The elite Knights under the Kings leadership won a major tactical victory over the Venetians at Taranto, a small Venetian port city in southern Italy. Charging through and breaching the Venetian line, the Sicilian Knights wrought havoc upon the Venetian field army there. However, a valiant defense by a small force of Venetian soldiers atop a strategically-important hill southeast of Taranto inflicted severe losses upon the advancing Knights. The initiative in southern Italy hangs in the balance as both sides have lost much of their forces. Farther north, the Sicilians unsuccessfully attacked the Byzantine beachhead. As the Sicilian infantry attacked, they were met by an (coincidental) Byzantine counter-attack. The two forces clashed, and although Byzantine casualties were heavy, the momentum of the battle was lost by the Sicilians, leaving the door open for deeper penetration of Sicilian territory by Byzantine forces. On Cyprus, a fanatical defense by the last, trapped Sicilian troops made the final Byzantine attack very costly. With the Sicilian garrison on Cyprus destroyed to the last man, Sicily has lost its foothold on the island. In addition to her military woes, Sicily now faces a small rebellion within her own territory; radically pious Italian Catholics, supported by Venetian funds, have risen up against the Kingdom.
Monastic Knights- A new force has appeared on the Italian battlefield. Coming from all over Europe to answer Venices call-to-arms, several orders of monastic knights -- most noticeably the Knights Templar and the Knights Hospitaler -- have begun to fight the Sicilians. Joining the Venetians in their northern offensive, these elitely trained and fanatically religious knights have proven a formidable force on the battlefield, despite their small numbers.
Western Europe
Castile- Pressing onward with the Reconquista, Castile has pushed into Cordova on new fronts. However, the main thrust in the center has been stalled by increasingly fanatical resistance. Castilian forces have fallen victim to hundreds of suicidal attackers, ambushing Castilian supply columns, charging Castilian forces as they move, and assassinating key Castilian commanders. It looks as though the forces of Christian Spain may never reach the holy city of Cordova.
Aragon- Aragon, the other great Spanish Christian power, has joined Castiles Reconquista. Opening a new eastern front, they have enjoyed moderate success.
France- With French commanders seemingly absent from Corsica and Sardinia, a Sicilian counterattack has pushed the French troops back, nearly into the sea. The French hold on their beachheads is tenuous at best. (Rika Heyli, this is your first warning. Get orders in next time.)
Britain
England- Wedding bells ring from churches across England as the new Prince of Wales is married to the eldest Princess of Scotland. This marriage may prove to be the first step towards a possible unification between England and Scotland. The monarchs of France, Ireland, Norway, and all other nations with interests in the British Isles hold their collective breaths to see what will come of this matrimonial union. Meanwhile, government subsidies of English-made goods and tariffs on imports have improved the economy, although the constant increasing of these import taxes and the money being spent to subsidize English goods is causing major inflation problems. The English economy may not be so strong as it appears.
Eastern Europe
Hungary- A surprise attack by Hungarian forces into the Byzantine Empire succeeded in cutting a swath from Romania to the Black Sea. Casualties were relatively low, until the Hungarians came upon a major Byzantine fortress by the sea. Though a month-long siege brought victory for the Hungarians, it was costly.
Scandinavia
Sweden- An expedition across the Baltic Sea yields Sweden a small coastal strip in Lithuania. However, the inland areas had already been claimed by Novgorod. In Stockholm, the mightiest harbor defenses in all the Baltic now protect Stockholm. Any ship trying to raid the city will have a tough time getting past the sturdy fortifications.
Middle East
Tekishan Empire- With a dramatic about-face, the Tekishan Empire (formerly the Turkmen) have become a civilized, urban society, with a well-defined imperial government and reorganized professional military. The heart of this new military is the Ghazi, a unique type of armored cavalry created to serve as the elite of the Tekishan army. It is yet to be seen how these horsemen will fare against the Byzantine army.
Byzantine Empire- HORRORS! While the Byzantine military was preoccupied fighting the war in Italy and Cyprus, a joint Tekishan-Hungarian invasion pummeled the Byzantine homeland from two directions. In the east, the fearsome Tekishan Horse Archers have penetrated deep into the Byzantine Caucasus. Using innovative cavalry tactics and new siege weapons designed and built by the Hungarians, the Turks successfully overwhelmed several of the half-completed castles in the Caucasus and eastern Anatolia. However, their advance was halted as they came upon the completed and heavily defended fortifications farther west. In Europe, the Hungarians have successfully launched a southeasterly assault, cutting off Walachia from Constantinople and threatening Adrianople. On a more positive note, the Byzantines have completed their momentous castle-building program, establishing fortresses throughout the land to help defend against the attacking Tekishans and Hungarians, and building a fourth ring of walls around Constantinople, making it the best-protected city in Europe. Finally, Byzantine engineers in Constantinople have developed a new ship-borne form of Greek Fire, which they think might prove effective against enemy galleys. They have incorporated this fearsome new weapon into the design for a ship they call the Dromon.
Asia
Mongols- Much to the relief of the Persians living along the border, the Mongols expanded peacefully rather than invading Persia. Expanding north, south, and west, the Mongols spread their domain far and wide. The establishment of the Khanate of Delhi, a Mongol tributary state ruled by a relative of Genghis Khan, has brought civilization to the southern reaches of the Mongol realm.
Khanate of Delhi- Gaining independence from the main Mongol Empire in return for a pledge of continued vassalage and tribute, the Delhi Khanate has become a civilized state centered around the ancient trade and learning center of Delhi. Throughout India, the local populations are intermarrying with the Mongol invaders, creating a distinct new ethnicity.
