Update 3- 1230 AD
Italy
Kingdom of Sicily- The Sicilians continue their relentless assault in southern Italy, pushing south with great ferocity while fortifying the northern border. With the excommunicated King leading a corps of elite Knights at the front, the attack has succeeded in pushing a good distance into Venetian lands. However, skillful Venetian tactics have taken their toll on the Sicilian troops; both sides have taken heavy casualties, and the King himself has been wounded, though not mortally. In Crete, the Sicilians have finally pushed the last of the Venetian defenders into the sea.
Venice- The Venetian army has been pushed farther south into the former Byzantine lands. Only the excellent tactical leadership of the Venetian commanders has saved them from total defeat; using what was once a unique Byzantine cavalry tactic, the Venetian formations fake a collapse of their central lines, drawing the enemy in and allowing the Venetian left side to outflank and outmaneuver the enemy. This has cost the Sicilians heavily, though Venice has also suffered many casualties. In Crete, the defeated Venetian garrison barely escaped total destruction, evacuating the island by way of a naval fleet stationed offshore. In a small running battle against Sicilian ships, a few Venetian galleys were lost for about as many Sicilian vessels. Throughout Europe, Venetians ambassadors have been attempting to garner support for the Venetian cause; this has led to a small uprising in Sicilian Italy, but little else -- so far.
Western Europe
France- Honoring their alliance with Venice, the French have launched an invasion of Corsica and Sardinia. Only a short distance from the Sicilian heartland, this poses a major threat to Sicilian security. While neither island has completely fallen to France, the landings were very successful.
Castile- The Castilian forces continue to push into Cordova, nearing the capital itself. While the Castilians enjoy great success, a new threat has presented itself: fanaticism. As the Christians approach the Islamic cultural center of Cordova, fanatical suicide attackers have begun to harass them, inflicting disproportionate casualties and decreasing morale. Some of these attackers sneak into Castilians camps at night and assassinate commanders; others charge the Castilian lines on a horse, while burning, to set Christian soldiers aflame; still others fight conventional battles to the death under a drug-induced euphoria.
England- VICTORY! This is the war cry as Gwynedd falls to the English army. Over the course of a long siege and a bloody final assault, the English have sustained heavy casualties. However, Wales has now collapsed, bringing all of Britain south of Hadrians Wall under English rule.
Eastern Europe
Bohemia- Without Holy Roman aid, Prague has fallen to the Hungarians, and with it the Bohemian state. Poland made only small advances in the north; most of the nation has fallen to Hungary.
Scandinavia
Sweden- The Swedes continue to expand in the east, and begin a new wonder in Stockholm, the Bank of Sweden. This, the first central bank in Scandinavia, will bring great prosperity to the Swedish nation.
Russia
Novgorod- Honoring their agreement not to expand into the land the Swedes called Finland, Novgorod has instead concentrated on expanding in other directions.
Middle East
Byzantine Empire- As a major castle-building initiative begins throughout the empire, Byzantine troops return to Italy for the first time since the sale of the Byzantine territories. Embarking from northern Greece, a Byzantine invasion force has successfully landed in southern Italy, though without linking up with the Venetian lines as desired. In Cyprus, Byzantine forces have pushed the Sicilians back, though at a high cost; the Sicilians had been in a defensive posture, and were alerted to the attack before the Byzantines reached the border.
Turkmen- The Turkmen have taken a major step towards civilization, establishing the port city of Astrakhan in the northern Caspian Sea. However, the city is as yet only a rough-and-ready trading post. From Astrakhan, the Turkmen carry on sea trade with Persia, increasing their economy. The Turkmen have also reached the Byzantine border in the Caucasus.
East Asia
Mongols- Turning south into the rich lands of India, the Mongols have had great success in pillaging and plundering. With Delhi falling to the Mongol horde, there are rumors that a permanent Mongol kingdom could be established there. In the meanwhile, the Mongols have made contact with the Persians in the west. The world holds it breath as the Persians make first contact with these fearsome nomads.
