Grand Vizier Fatih Beg of Goker I

Grand_Vizier_Fatih_Beg.JPG

Of the many positions of the Tekishan royal court under the Sultan and his immediate family, none were regarded with more appreciation and honor than that of the grand vizier. The grand vizier was the Sultan's most trusted advisor. He overlooked all of the Sultan's major building projects, and personally led his forces into battle wherever the Sultan ordered. They were fiercly loyal and strongly religious, regarded as legends among the Turks, and feared among the Sultan's enemies.

And out of all the grand vizier's of the Tekishan empire, few are remembered more than Fatih Beg, Grand Vizier of Sultan Goker I. He had grown up the son of Turkmen nobility in Khiva, and had been the future Sultan's closest friend since childhood. For years they had learned in the universities of Bagdad together, before Fatih left to serve several years in the Tekishan army. Fatih quickly became known for his millitary brilliance, examplifying everything that a Turkmen warrior should be. Upon ascending to the throne, Goker immediatly appointed his comrade as his grand vizier, and it was less than a year before he gave him his first great assignement.

It was not long before the Sultan gave Fatih one of the most crucial orders in Turkish history. Fatih was summoned from the Grozny charshia one day by royal guards and led into the grand hall of the Sultan's palace. The sun was high above at noon and it's rays fell through the Sultan's traditionally shaped windows, exposing exotic rugs and tapestries. On his throne sat the Sultan, surrounded by guards and scribes. Fatih bowed over halfway, so as to give the Sultan have the respect he gave god, and listened to his instructions. The wise Sultan opened his mouth and spoke

"Oh Fatih, dearest friend of mine, I call upon you for one of the greatest tasks in the history of our people. In the Southwest is a rich and powerful infidel empire, with wide fields of grain and libraries of ancient knowledge. They rule this land from a great city that I have heard is the jewel of the world, and have repelled countless an advance by Arabic and Turkish armies. Oh Fatih, as long as these men occupy this land, our world will never be safe. It falls upon us, the burden, to expel them and ensure the safety of us and our allies. For as long as they control this bridge between our world and theirs, the Infidels may cross again most easily, like they did two hundred years previous. Our destiny is clear... it is up to you to fulfill it"

And Fatih nodded.

"It will be as you wish oh Sultan, and if god wills it my armies will march on these enemy armies and with the will of god reign victorious on the battlefield."

"Fatih, you I trust above all of my advisors, I fully believe you can do this. Your armies shall have 6000 horse archers and 8000 swordsmen. These men have been trained long and hard, and if ever you should need something, feel free to ask me as if you would your brother."

Fatih nodded in understandment and went from the palace to his house a way down the imperial street. He took a shortcut through the common sectors of town, and cordially replied to anyone who greeted him with a merhaba. The reddish burgundy stones of the path nicely complimented the bustling little wooden shops, with their red roofs, lining both sides of the road. From all sides, sounds of bartering and conversation could be heard, while the scent of turkish food filled the air. At home, he said goodbye to his wife Khadija, and then went down to the barracks to meet his armies.

The Tekishan armies had left the barracks and were all assembled in the field outside Grozny. When Fatih-Beg rode up on horseback to face his armies, there were many shouts, cheers, and exclamations from the Tekishan troops. For eleven years these young men had grown up with Grand Vizier Beg, and when he rode up some even shouted; "Greetings oh Fatih Beg, the father of our army!"

Fatih Beg was a humble man, but he was so well liked he didn't dare stop the cheering of the soldiers so as to not appear rude. He ordered them on some basic drills to assure himself of their discipline, and then gave them a rest of sixty hour glass revolutions. Young maidens from the outlying villages carried jugs of water from the village wells to the thirsty soldiers, and some even offered food, which the soldiers politely refused. When time came, Fatigh beg interrupted the rest and led the third prayer of the day. Thousands of bodieas of devout slaves moved correspondingly towards the holy city, and once they were done, they rose and orginized themselves into their respective units just as easily. With that Fatih Beg shouted "onward!", mounted his own horse, and along with his generals led the march to Byzantium.

Update 5- 1250 AD

Middle East

Byzantine Empire- Byzantine actions throughout the empire have a fair degree of success against the invading Turks and Hungarians. In the Caucasus, a surprise landing by Byzantine forces has caught the Tekishan Army of Groznyy off-guard. The beachhead is small, however, but they have a strong foothold. In the eastern Anatolia, freshly-reinforced Byzantine fortresses have had more success in holding off the Tekishan advance, although several have fallen. A Byzantine counterattack against the Tekishan army in the east failed at its objective of reversing the momentum of the war, although it did serve as a spoiling attack, slowing the Turkic invasion. With their greatly superior mobility over the heavily-armored cataphracts and infantry of the Byzantines, the Tekishan horsemen have evaded and outrun their attackers.

Tekishan Empire- Tekishan advances in the Anatolia have been slowed by improved Byzantine tactics and fortifications. However, the masterful mountain-fighting tactics of the Tekishan armies have allowed them to advance through the rough, undefended terrain without casualties. Only the costly sieges of the two northern fortresses, which ultimately succeeded, took a toll on the Turks.

Persia- Tensions heighten between the Mongols and Persia. The Mongols have sent a caravan of rich silks, gold, spices, and all the treasures of Asia. However, the caravan never reached the Shah; a greedy noble, intent on having the riches to himself, had his soldiers attack the convoy and steal its goods. The Mongol escorts and diplomats were killed; the two nations are now on the verge of war.

Mongols- Expansion continues. With the exception of the Persian trade incident, things are uneventful in the Khanate.

Eastern Europe

Hungary- The Hungarian army rejoices as Walachia surrenders. An attempt by the Byzantine to reinforce the territory failed when the naval force tried to land its detachment on plains overlooked by a great hill… occupied by the Hungarian army. The Byzantine troops were slaughtered, and Walachia surrendered. However, a Byzantine counterattack near Adrianople did succeed in pushing a bulge in one section of the Hungarian line.

Kievan Rus- A Kievan counteroffensive into Romania in support of their Byzantine allies has had minor success against largely undefended land.

Italy

Venice- The mother of all battles is fought between a combined army of Venetian, Holy Roman, and Templar troops in central Italy. The massive force attacks against a heavily fortified Sicilian front; the Sicilian troops have been ordered to die in place rather than retreat, and so the Venetians only advance after taking heavy casualties and annihilating the Sicilian defenders. In the south, a Venetian counterattack has met the Sicilians head-on; the resulting trainwreck of a battle inflicted heavy losses on both sides.

Sicily- With their defenses overrun in the north, and heavy fighting taking its toll in the south, the only thing the Sicilians have to smile about is the return of the Byzantine-occupied land. With Venetian-allied forces in sight of Naples, the Sicilian monarchy has begun to make preparations to evacuate the city. Despite the imminent danger to the city, a number of local artisans and merchants have begun the building of a great Cathedral to reinforce the kingdom’s return to Catholicism.

Knights Hospitaler- The Knightly Order of St. John has withdrawn from Italy, its holy war against the former heretic-king of Sicily over. The Templars, however, remain.

Scandinavia

Sweden- INVASION NORWAY! Swedish forces smash into Norway, overrunning the capital of Oslo in less than a year of fighting. In the north, the small local garrisons used the terrain to their advantage, taking a toll on the Swedes, but ultimately falling to their well-organized military.

Britain

England- The inflation scare has passed as the English monarchy has taken action to combat it. Establishing a new economic advisory council, the monetary policy of the kingdom is now out of the hands of the king. This fits well with the completion of the Magna Carta, a document which limits the powers of the monarchy. No sooner is this finished then a great central bank, the Bank of England, is begun in London based on the Swedish model. Meanwhile, relations improve every day between England and Scotland; word is, the new King and Queen are quite happy, having now six sons and a daughter together.

Western Europe

France- France officially withdraws from Corsica and Sardinia, ending their involvement in the Italian War.

Castile- DISASTER! In one week of devastating attacks, Cordovan fanatics have essentially derailed the Castilian invasion. Drugged-up fanatical warriors calling themselves Hashishans have mastered the tactic of murdering Castilian commanders and officials in their sleep. Similar fanatics, known as Almoravids, have created mass panic amongst the Castilian forces by carrying out terrifying raids, firebombings, and the like against them. Coupled with a full-scale Cordovan attack, the Castilian line has been pushed way back.

OOC: Sorry for the relative disorganization, folks. I had to kinda rush this update. Stats will be up later tonight. Everyone gets a nice bonus. :)

Wha.. Did you read my orders? You seem to have ignored half of my attack for no apparent reason... I mean, you made me advance somewhere where I didn't even order an advance, and made no mention of the critical part of my plan. I'm not angry or anything.. just kind of dissapointed and confused.

Byzantine Story(secret, u can't use it to ur advantage, minion, I'm watching u...)

Somewhere in the Caucuses...

Lord Manuel snorted when he read wat the Abbasid Ambassador said to his brother:

"We have done nothing to aid the Turks, we cannot explain how they managed to attack the fortress between our borders." explained the Ambassador.

"If that is true, then how did they get there? They do not posses a navy of any sorts. The only explainable reason is that the Abbasid Caliphate allowed the Turkish to go through they're territory. Stop shivering ambassador, my spies on the border informed me of it the instant they could, we will forgive you, this time, anymore Turkish "expedition" to Mecca conviently side-tracks to Byzantium, we may not be so kind..."

"I will go inform the Caliph now, Emperor Gilad..."

"I'm afraid not, ambassador, a Byzantine Ambassador will be going to Baghdad to inform the Caliph. You can stay here and enjoy the pleasantaries of the Byzantine Court. You may now leave ambassador"

The parchment ends...

"You see Commander Astruias, the Abbasid ambassador is clearly lying through his teeth. He does not understand Byzantine politics. We are in a diffcult position, we have a small beachhead, but this area is heavily garrisoned. I have decided to withdraw from the Caucases to Constantinople then to Wallachia."

"My Lord Manuel, the Turkish Capital is close, a quick attack and the capital would be ours!"

"Commander, but how can we hold it? The Turkish will fight to the death for their capital. Something that will not be good for us. We retreat, and that is final."

"As u command, it shall be done..."

In Constantinople...

"Emperor, we cannot defeat the Turkish in battle or in defense. They are too numerous and we cannot fight a two-front war. If it was just Byzantinum against the Tekishan Empire, we could fight. But against Hungary as well? It cannot be done."

"Advisor, u speak the whole truth. I will send a peace offer to the Tekishan Empire. And see wat they offer us..."

After Peace Negotiations...

"BAM, By God! The Tekishan Empire has refused our offer! May the Mongols take them! Advisor, Cancel the retreat from the Caucases, attack the Turkish Capital! And when they reach it, Burn It!?

"My lord, calm down, the Turkish's equipment is far superior to ours. We do not have anything that can stand up against their Horse-Archers. However, on the good side, France has sent money to us to aid us in the war against the Turks."

"May God thank the French, neverless, have my Hungarian forces moved against the Turks now!"

"Yes my lord..."

From Byzantine EMpire

Wat do u want for peace?

my wonder should be 4/5...

what were the bonuses?

OOC: and wat about the varagian guard?

Bonuses. Right. I'm gonna give everyone who wrote a story +3 treasury. Hold on a second.
About the Varangian Guard; you have enough UU's already. As I said on AIM, I'll let you instate the Varangian Guard as a corps of soldiers acting in a special capacity. That means you recruit normal troops (swordsmen, pikemen, whatever) and you can train some of them into an elite Varangian Guard unit. They will not be an actual front-page unit.
