stNNES4: Pheonix From the Ashes

Kuluk Khan sat by the fire in the hut formly owned by the headman of the village--that is head man till Kuluk seperated his head from his village--and body < smile >. Kuluk looked at his newest koumiss cup, the former headmans skull, it was a good drinking cup, the headman had fought well, one on one with Kuluk. The great ride was going well, village after village and small tribes had fallen under Cimmarian sway. To the south layed a land of soft civilized dwellers called A- r- m- e-n- n- i -a, it was where the fine bronze sword he had taken from the headman was built. Kuluk lusted for more such weapons and would get them, either by threat of attack or by conquest.

The captured lands had proved easy to control, the steppe and hill tribes respected strengh and saw the Cimmarian victory as the proof that the Cimmarian God Pa-Pa was superior to their own and accepted the will of the Gods and tried to become Cimmarians in all ways of life. Great stone and wood temples to Pa-Pa were built in every captured village. But all this could prove fleeting, the allied tribes were only bound to him till the great raid was over, then they would yet again be rivals and enemies. An idea had been turning over and over in his head, a plan to bind the warriors to him and weaken his enemies. It began after his victory over the village headman in single combat, over the next few days he saw many of the younger tribesmen from a dozen seperate tribes coping his ( thus Cimmarian ) ways and manners, everything from hairstyle to decorations on his saddle. It was hero worship. He would use this to his advantage, if the youngest and best warriors wanted to follow Kuluk Khan--who needed their tribes? He had a name already-The Khan's Ashinyi ayui The Khan's Blood Band, only blooded ( had killed a man in combat ) warriors were accepted from any tribe and swore an oath to Pa-Pa and the Khan. It was the best of both worlds, he would have his cake and eat it too--what was cake? Never mind, he would draw the best steppe warriors to improve his army and at the same time drain the strengh or his opponents by taking their best warriors. His enemies would still exist but would be too weak to oppose him.

Now to figure out the few remaining details of his plan, he called his close's advisors to him and the council fire burned late into the night.

If you fail to do so we will burn your towns, trample your crops, molest your cattle, kill your women--or is that the other way around? Never mind we will DO BOTH if we do not get what we want!! Failure to take us seriously will be dire.

Very well. We shall give you bronze.

Egypt. The start of civilization. And now it was time for Pharaoh Nefer Seti to take reign. His dynasty would prove to be the most dynamic, the most inspirational, and affect most of the people’s lives then any other Pharaoh before him. The ceremony was held in the city of Thebes, a metropolis split down the middle be the deep blue Nile. At the Temple of Horus, the Pharaoh’s patron God, Seti stood above the sarcophagus of the previous Pharaoh, last of the Narmer regime. Seti came from a new family, that chosen by the high priests of Amon. And that afternoon, after the coronation and the interment of the dead Pharaoh, amidst the thousands of peasants who gathered to watch, Pharaoh Nefer Seti became a living God.

---

Seti had humble beginnings, believe it or not, amidst the northern reaches of the True Kingdom, that of Upper Egypt. He grew up in the town of Assut, a small fishing village near the border of the False Kingdom. He was not a fisherman, however, he helped his family on the wheat farm they owned every day, until he grew old enough to know what he wanted. With the blessings of his father, he left for Thebes, intent on joining the Imperial Army of Egypt.

In just five years fighting in Nubia, the boy that joined the army became a man leading it. He was made a field general in just two years, then given his own army just one year after that. He did what normally took men twenty years to do, in a quarter of the time. Seti soon became Pharaoh’s favorite general, when the largest Nubian settlement was ransacked, and the plunder carried back to Thebes.

A year after the fighting had calmed down in Nubia, the general returned to Thebes and was offered the job of Grand Vizier to the Pharaoh. Surprised, but excited, Nefer took the job. He was now next in line to become Pharaoh. And he did just that, after Pharaoh, the walking God, was killed in a hunting expedition accident. And so, Nefer Seti, a boy who envisioned himself fighting for the Pharaoh at age five, soon became the leader of the most powerful Kingdom of the Nile.

---

As Pharaoh, Nefer Seti began to initiate a core amount of programs, designed to benefit and expand the power of Egypt. He wanted to make Egypt the most prestigious, cultural, and protected nation in the world.

More story when I feel in the mood….

ORDERS
-Change ruler name to Seti Dynasty.
-Initiate a program to gather all intellectuals of Egypt, and redistribute them around the country to teach from special villas and temples to the nobles who can afford it (increase education with one credit)
-Back at the palace, the Imperial researchers will be given extra funding to examine new metals for the army and navy (1c into research…towards Iron (I know you don’t want to give Iron out yet, but I want to be ready for when you do :))) (1st Turn)
-Obviously pay the upkeep that is required to both the navy and the army.
-The majority of the army, 3,000 warriors and 500 archers, will remain in Nubia to hold and secure the land conquered. They will build and guard settlements for Egyptian settlers, and displace Nubians into prison camps or sell them to slavery to help the economy.
-The rest of the army will remain concentrated in the north, guarding the forts and other barriers with Lower Egypt.
-Send expeditions for trade off into the desert, south, and try to remain on good terms with the Egyptians in Memphis and trade them war materials for their fights against the Sea Peoples.

Can I join as Gauls? (Then I'll settle down and form a respectable Gallic kingdom, then a mighty Gallic Empire!)

Sheep2: Make the Zulus yourselve. :p Actually I would prefer that you don't join as a Bantu nation in South Africa just yet, because the migration technically didn't happen yet. However, if you really want to, make it yourself.

Amen: It would be difficult, they are rather disunited. You could take on the Cisalpine Gauls, the Transalpine Gauls, the Southern Gauls, or the Northern Gauls if you wanted.

Transalpine Gauls, please. :) (That's the one with Alesia, right?) I have a good story cookin' up. :)

Chief Vercingetorix has a long memory. He remembers whren he was just a boy of 19 years, fighting in Northern Italy. The occasional foray into Etruscan territory, that sort of thing. He was young, wanted some glory, some fame, some money, and some damn-good stories to tell the boys back in his home oppidum. He remembers a scouting mission that he had once partaken in. It was the precursor to a grand plan, the sacking of Tarquinii. (Which never happened. Poor planning and bad timing, y'know?) He blended in, looking like a common peddler, selling his wares in Etruscan land. The first thing that startled him were the roads.

He couldn't elaborate enough on the roads! Sure, the Gauls had their fair-share of "roads" (read: little more than dirt paths), but these were ROADS! As he got closer to Tarquinii, he noticed the stones that paved the roads. He thought, "The most powerful weapon the Etruscans have in their arsenal is the paved road. It allows them to supply their armies cheaply and effectively, and deliver her men right to the conflict. The roads point to all nations of the earth, like a dagger to stab the heart of her foes."

He was nearly knocked senseless when he came over the hillock to gaze upon Tarquinii. Stone structures, masterful fortifications, and what appeared to be some form of basic sanitation. He knew that he could apply this knowledge well, and not just for the sacking of the city.

The foray failed. A few dozen more raids later, and he was a man of 22 years. He decided he had had enough adventure, and wanted to return to the rolling hills and deep forests of his home oppidum, Alesia. Alesia, he thought to himself as he approached the city gates, will one day be ten times grander than Tarquinii.

Three years later, he is elected chieftain. Normally, Vercingetorix would have only become chieftain of his oppidum and the surrounding farming villages. But he had played a dastardly political game, which ended with him being the ruler of all northern Gaul. City after city he assimilated, and as he marched through the streets of these cities, he could hear the chants, Vercingetorix rix Celti! Vercingetorix, king of Gaul.

Vercingetorix has grand plans for Alesia, for Gaul, for the Celtic world. From Lusitania to Galatia, from Dacia to Hibernia, the Celts will reign supreme! No more squatting in backward oppida, it is time that they built grand cities! Trained grand hordes of warrior-heroes! The bards shall forever sing the name of Vercingetorix, king of Gaul!

Myanmar

Trade was the pulse of the nation. The great road which connected Myanmar with Funan to the South-East and the lands of the Ganges to the North-West brought wealth and prosperity to the people. Every day caravans loaded with goods traveled passed Myanmar. And with the caravans from distant lands came the ideas of the people who lived there. One of the first ideas which was adapted by the Burmese (this is how the people of Myanmar called themselves) was the ricefarming. Although rice was known to the farmers for a very long time it was never cultivated in such a great scale as in the lands of the South. Travellers who had visited the Mekong were surprised by the gigantic farms of the farmers there. As they told stories about those impressive farms the Brumese farmers along the Irrawaddy river soon begung to make their own farms. And they used the big Brumese waterbuffaloes to work their fields. The practice of ricefarming soon spread throughout the entire nation.

But Myanmar didn't only adapt foreign technologies, they also were very good creators on their own. Especially their constructions were impressive. The well built roads were a relief to the foreign traders as soon as they entered the country after travelling through thick jungles were fallen trees often blocked the way. In Myanmar the big trade route was paved and even in the rainy season it was dry. A very special thing about the trade road in Myanmar were the numerous shrines along the road. They were mostly used by the Burmese farmers and traders to ask the ancestors for protection, but often foreign traders used who were going along way did the same. But not only roads and shrines were built. The new city of Rangoon, which was built near the Irrawaddy river was constructed in a way that even the biggest floodings couldn't damage the city. Big walls protected the houses and canals directed the water on the fields of far away farms which needed the water.

Orders:
-cultivate rice along the banks of the Irrawaddy
-send my canoe armada to discover foreign lands and secure new trade routes
-use my army to protect the main trade routes and my borders
-expand to the north
-grow archers
-increase infrastructure (better streets for the traders)
-increase education+
-start trading with Bagan

THE LIFE OF AN APACHE BRAVE
From childhood on, an Apache child dreams of the day he would run off to the hunt, or to war, with the Braves. Apache children are taught to hunt almost as soon as they learn to walk. By the time they are seven or eight they are expert hunters and bring their share of game to his family. Brothers, sisters and friends practice marksmanship; and in their early teens they hunt buffalo calves together. As they grow older, the warriors would allow them to join war parties, and to do other chores for adult warriors. Friends would try to join the same military society so they could fight together, and if necessary, die together.

There are no elaborate rituals for initiating an Apache child to adulthood. They simply take their place when they showed they are ready. They would then begin courting a mate, although they probably would not marry until they owned many feathers. Youngsters hoped to own many, as wealth is counted in terms of feathers. The Apache value feathers greatly and considered them to be sacred. If a person is wealthy, it might have more than one partner. By the time they are forty, they no longer went on war parties, but joined the council of elders, whose advice was asked and respected by all. Apaches do not often display their emotions but, when a brave dies, their family and friends howls in grief. The death of a brave warrior brings scenes of open grief, with close friends and relatives often gashing their bodies as a further sign of mourning.

Byzantium

7 years, that is how long King Julius has been on the throne of Byzantium. He is the 3rd son of the legendary King Dlato, the one is is believed to have founded Byzantium. Dlato constructed the first wall around the city to keep the Dorians out, a threat that loomed beyond the walls. When Dlato died at the age of 46 from a mysterious disease, he left 3 sons, Tirous, Priam, and Julius. Tirous was the oldest and inherited the throne at the age of 17. But Tirous was corrupt and used the wealth left by his father for his own benefit. He threw parties and suddenly died one night, some say he was murdered. Priam then inherited the throne, but he had a flaw too. He was a coward. When Byzantium's armies were called to fight, he ran and hid. The army was shocked to see this and forced him to abdicate from the throne. Julius was left to inherit the throne. Immediately he ordered the construction of a second wall around the grand city. A port was also constructed and traders began to pour in. All was golden at the golden horn. Julius looked across the Straights into Asia and found oppertunity. An expidition was sent, and Byzantium now controled both sides of the straights. The city of Nicea was founded, named after Julius' wife. Back in Byzantium, another threat was looming and the armies were rallied to war...
