stNNES4: Pheonix From the Ashes

Motivation? *threatens NK with a pointy stick* How's that for motivation?

Honestly, though, I think you should finish the update today because I know I wil.

Oh, you know the update will come eventually. When is a different matter. It's still being like written. I suppose it will be done by Friday. I hope, at any rate. At any rate, I want to start another update directly after that, so Sunday would be a nice one for the next update. What I'm saying is, be ready to send in orders.

Oh, I'll be ready. Just make sure you actually UPDATE this time. Come on, I already finished two (or more?) updates while you are still working on just one. I know its bigger, but bloody hell, this just isn't funny.

Update 1 (1950 BCE): Founding of Empires

The Call of Battle sounds through many of the lands. Through the hills, the valleys echoing off of the cliffs of mountain ranges and the walls of cities. Men charge furiously forth into battle, determined to win new lands for their masters, determined to destroy all those who might stand in the way of their sworn sovereigns.

And so it was in Mesopotamia.

Eight sovereigns prayed to their respective gods before the march, two more prayed to the same gods to destroy the opposite army. And then they were off to battle.

The united army of the combined kings marched on Assyria with one half of their strength. The Persian King was off to destroy Medea, and so the forces were commanded by the King of Babylon, named Hammurabi.

They set of fin high spirits, but by the time the snaking column of infantry had reached Assyria, they were already growing irritated and restless, some wanting to return to their fields. The King would have none of that, and told them to kindly stop their complaints or they would find their heads on a royal chopping block.

The irritation spread among the higher ranks, though, and even to Hammurabi himself, due to the problem of actually finding an army to fight against.

The Assyrians led the coalition’s forces on a wild gooses chase through most of Upper Mesopotamia, and though the coalition took a great deal of land, no decisive battle was yet fought.

On the other hand, the campaign against Medea yielded a more exciting, if not more pleasing result to the Persians.

The Persian King marched onward into the Zagros Mountains to meet the Medean horder in the mountains. Drawing up his army in typical fashion, but keeping the newfangled chariots in the rear in reserve, he gave battle as soon as he saw the Medeans. They easily stopped the infantry charge, and a ferocious battle ensued, with neither side gaining ground.

Halfway through, though, the entire coalition’s left flank collapsed as the Medeans broke the disorganized and undisciplined Mesopotamian allies of the Persians. Their allies fleeing the field, the Persians were in danger of being outflanked. Seeing this risk immediately, the Persian King sent forth the chariots commanded by Cymbaxes, his son. They rapidly outflanked the advancing Medeans, and charging through the dust of the retreating Mesopotamians, burst out and slaughtered the startled Medeans where they stood.

The Medeans were driven back, but not utterly beaten, and the Persians needed time to regroup and repair their chariots. Hence, stalemate ensued with the momentum of both armies broken, however, both are liable to be able to rapidly regain that come next campaign.

Cymbaxes, meanwhile, was given a hero’s welcome as he came back to Susa to be thanked by the people and give thanks to the gods. On his way to the temple, he was showered with cheers as he rode by in his now famous gilded chariot, and at the temple, he was given a new shield and sword, both blessed by the gods. All eyes are now on the favored son of Persia.

Meanwhile, on the shores of the Phoenician cities and the Egyptian Delta, a new force has come from afar to raid and pillage the homes of the people.

They come from the sea, with naught warning but a sail over the horizon bearing a strange device. The sail looms larger, and before the town’s watch can even be prepared, they storm ashore. They burn. They sack. They plunder.

There seems to be no end to them. Only time will tell if these new... Sea Peoples... can be driven back into the sea from whence they came.

Meanwhile, down the Nile, the King of Upper Egypt rules from a stately throne in Thebes. His armies have launched a campaign against the Nubians to the south. They have established a new city in the south, Aswan, which is currently a base for most major troop operations. In the meantime, they have taken much land, though there is still more land to be taken, and that which is now ruled by the Pharaoh must be consolidated. Also the Northern Frontier with the other Egypt has been fortified. Also, the Egyptians have developed hieroglyphic writing.

Across the sea and far from any tales of Sea Peoples or Medeans (though of course there are rumors) is the land of Byzantium. The city has grown ever more rich and prosperous, and they have extended their rule past the Hellespont and into Asia, where they have founded a city at Nicaea.

Not all is well at the Golden Horn, though. While the city is well prepared to face any threat, with another wall being constructed and a new ship harbor as well, they have encountered several new threats. The citystate of Euboea is extending it’s influence slowly but surely through the islands of the Aegean, and soon may rise to rival Byzantium. The Dorian also loom on the horizon as always, and word from Mycenae has it that they have broken through the isthmus and into Peloponnese. Also the Minoans grow stronger and more threatening to all of the Hellenic world every day, while Troy encroaches on all the colonies on Asia. (OOC: Asia is being used as in the ancient Greek terminology, for what we now call Asia Minor).

Thousands of miles away lies Carthage, a growing power. The men of this city have continued their trading efforts and also founded a settlement on the shores of Sicilia.

Across the Med and at the head of the Adriatic Sea lies Aquilon, with its rich musical heritage... and rich trading potential, as well. The nation undergoes a series of reforms, which cover almost all areas of the government. They have managed to invent a new system of keeping records written down, an alphabet. Meanwhile, the army is reformed to a highly efficient new extreme, and they drill daily.

However, the attempts to refine a coinage system are the subject of frequent counterfeits, so these efforts fell through. Also the city of Vindobonda was briefly established only to succumb to a newly found barbarian people, the Helvetii, who, while not quite as strong as the Gauls, are nonetheless very powerful. Another city has been established at Salonae, which is now the primary recruiting grounds for the Aquilon army, while Ravenna has also been founded as an attempt to bring Gauls, Etruscans, and Aquilonii together.

This too, fell through, as while some Gauls were friendly, most were slighted by the Auilonii “tribute”, which consisted mainly of musicians, and thus continued their raids.

On the other side of the vast holdings of the Gauls, the Celts have explored the British coast, and were immediately followed by thousands of their people, who established a colony on the shoreline. These settlers have made contact with the Belgicae, who appear friendly enough, and trade has started on a small scale with these mainly Celtic peoples.

Back in Britain proper, the people have rapidly expanded, founding the new settlement of Oxford, a rapidly growing town with a large population, almost as large as London itself, and large markets with goods from every known land in Britain. Roads extend to the Picts to the north, who appear not nearly so brutal as they first seemed and much more friendly, to the Welsh to the west, a suspicious people who are fiercely independent, back to the capital, and to the Dumnonii, an excellent new trading partner.

Across the North sea, lying in the northwestern forests of the lands not yet called Germania are the Saxons. A fierce warrior people only recently migrated from the “Womb of all men” to the north, they are quite unlike their barbarian neighbors, and seem ready to go forth and conquer all. Rumor has it that there are rich areas to the south to plunder.

Meanwhile, to the north lie the land of the Goths. They have made great strides in the past few years, getting real trading established with the Jutlanders, and also expanding slowly across the Baltic, though the men of the people urge the leader forward with more vigor. They want to conquer the lands that lie so ripe and ready to the south.

In Southern Ukraine, on the shores of the Dneiper River lies the new state of Tripolye, an advanced state descended from the Scythian Farmers that lie about them. They have expanded down the river considerably, and founded a new port to begin trading with the peoples of the south. Though no formal contact has been made, the private traders of the latter are sailing near constantly for the area.

On the other hand, the Cimmerians have been quite more violent in extending their dominion. They now have rulership over all the lands between the Caspian sea and the Black, and are now slowly reaching their feelers down into the south. Only Armenia stands in their way, stands between them and the rich plunder of Mesopotamia.

A thousand miles away, the land of the Bactrians stirs. The people are already expanding slowly, and they have met the Scythians already, and so may do so in battle. While little can be said of their culture, they are formidable in martial prowess, and may soon attack the Scythians, or perhaps the city state of Balkh to the south.

To the south, in Dravidia, the city state of Magadha has slowly conquered its way to becoming one of the major states of the region. It has a significant rival in Satavahanihara, though this may be overcome in the future, perhaps.

From here we can follow a well traveled trader’s road into southeast Asia. The nation of Myanmar has been expanding in recent years, and has founded a new city, as well as come into contact with the new nation of Bagan. Bagan appears rather similar to themselves in many respects, though different, some say this stems from the influence of their neighbors to the north.

Meanwhile, the land of Funan has grown richer and richer in recent months. The rice plantations are slowly growing bigger and bigger, all over the land now. The fertile Mekong Delta has been secured and is now an excellent growing source for new crops, as is the newly secured great freshwater sea in the north. The land is all in all prospering.

The land of Langkasuka in the far south has been growing rapidly, in part due to the king’s new inventions, in part due to their excellent new watercraft (of course, the former is somewhat inclusive of the latter). They have expanded onto Sumatra, where they have found tigers abounding and many warriors. Legend says their new neighbors ride into battle on tigers, though the reports somewhat falsify this. They have also discovered the land of Atjeh to the East, which is another prosperous trading nation. Singapore has been colonized, trade has been established with Borneo, and gold has been found in the north. It seems a golden Age to many.

To the East is the land of Borneo, newly established. While it is not that well developed, it is still growing, having expanded a little and liable to have much more room to grow.

Across the blue waters of the south China Sea is the land of Taiwan. These people have succeded in conquering the nearby Yami, in the process inventing a new kind of bow, a triple banked craft that is the most advanced in the world in terms of seafaring technology. They have begun to trade en masse with many of the nearby peoples. Meanwhile, a fisherman has come back to the land with an astounding tale of a land of thousands of islands to their south, perhaps a new colonization target. Of course, not all believe that more islands is what the island needs, but some believe it is a good way to preserve isolationism (not all think this is a good thing).

To the north is the land of Hangzhou. The City has grown considerably, a new canal having been dug and another wall has started. New educational reforms are expanding the horizons of their minds, while a young man in the kingdom has discovered a means of recording events and quantities on a stone or clay. Writing. Trade with those of Taiwan, Wu and Shang have started up.

Far northward, we find the land of the Machus. They have expanded much in recent years, and have taken to raiding the Koreans and the Chinese, though the latter have erected a series of walls and forts to keep the Manchus out.

To their west, we find the Mongols, a people who are rapidly expanding towards a lake they believe to be the heart of all mankind, and also fertile ground.

And in the new world, the Apaches are gradually expanding, and launching large raids against the Anasazi and the Hausetecs. Nothing of note has really come of them, though new buffalo hunting techniques are becoming all the rage.

NPC diplo:

Strictly NPC diplo is in italics, so though you ought to read it, you needn’t.

Oh, come on, we're BACTRIANS! We live in what basically can be regarded as a steppe! One'd think that we'd at least learn from the Scythians...

Hello neighbours to the north. We are similar and culture so we will give you an advice: It is well known that the people of the far north are savages who eat children and drink their mother's blood. We suggest you to keep away from them!

Oh and as a gesture of friendship we would be willing to trade with you.

Not really on the steppe. You're in between the mountains and the desert, but not really what I'd call the "steppe". Plus you aren't barbie.

No.

We'd agree to the trade.

So what? Your Scythians aren't in what I'd call a steppe. And yet, here they are, riding horses just to make us mad.
