Many of the diplomatic exchanges begin with someone encouraging me to stop trading with their enemies. In the past, I have always ignored them, but more and more I've been getting into the Diplomatic game and I was wondering exactly what they mean. I'm assuming that they mean they want me to sever trade routes from any of those civ's cities to any of my cities, rather than to just end any Deals (wheat for sheep, etc) that I may have, right?
So do I have to go into each of my cities and nix those foreign trade routes? If so, I have no clue how to do it. Or does cancelling Open Borders do the trick? Seems like I've had trade routes going without Open Borders, but I may be wrong.

It just means that you have to end the deals, it happens automatically when you say yes. If you as an AI to do this, then you will get a negative modifier with the one that you asked them to stop trading with.

Nope. They want you to end any 'ongoing' deals with the other civ. If you accept, you'll automatically terminate any resource trades, Open Borders agreements, etc. with the target civ - and losing Open Borders will nix the inter-city trade routes for you. It also usually ticks off the target civ.

I don't know if it'll kill Defensive Pacts (presumably yes) or Permanent Alliances (presumably no), because I've never been in a position to find out.

Sometimes the AI just greets you with "You should not be trading with our worst enemy". I don't think that you have to worry about that, except there might be more pressure along those lines in the future. You do not get a -1 mark unless they come to you with a stop trading demand where you can actually choose to stop trading as a response. If you do choose to do that then that cancels Open Borders and stops any ongoing trades that you have going. It will also give you a -1 "You stopped trading with us" score with the Civ that you stopped trading with.

It also depends on which civ you cancel on. For instance, I don't think Ghandi will give you a -1 "You stopped trading with us" penalty (even if you stop as a result of a demand), whereas Tokugawa has given me a -2 "You refused to stop trading with our worst enemy" penalty when I've refused.

I don't think so. All civs will give you the penalty if you stop trading with them/refuse to stop trading with their enemies.

Is there any penalty if I decide on my own to cancel a trade deal?

I don't think there's a straight neg modifier if you break off trade, but remember that there are pretty nice positive modifiers for keeping up trade. Open borders is usually a +2 and "our trade relations have been fair: is anywhere from +1 to +4.

There is no penalty if you cancel a trade deal on your own.

Ghandi will not give you the -1 for stopping trade. There are some other things like that where there is also no penalty with him. Though, in my current game, I have done that to him a fair amount and even there is only -1 for declaring on friend, there are a total of about +9 positive modifiers, and it says that he is friendly, he won't talk to me.

AFAIK Gandhi doesn't care if you don't give in to his tribute/help demands.

There is no negative modifier if you break a deal normally (in active deals or when talking to the leader) but when someone else asks you to break a deal then you'll get the negative with the "someone else" (if you refuse) OR the trading partner (if you say yes).

Don't start trade relations (including Open Borders) with multiple civs who are not friends; you'll be forced to choose sides in the future. It's impossible to please everyone.

I second. Plus, you'll need ''friendly'' civs when the time for the UN votes come. i'd say become friend with the second most populous civs (excluding yourself). As you will be nomited and the most populous civs will be, you'll need the votes of this civs.

Mansa Musa is also a nice little wuss, it took four rejections before he gave me a -1. I hate Mansa Musa so much...

but if you stop trading with MM because an AI demands you to, you get -4 immediately, and won't be able to talk to him for ages!
JC demanded it to me, i agreed and lost my best trade routes + tech trading partener, and then JC declared war to me!:crazyeye:
