will aim to play on Wednesday evening
Ralph
Turns have been played last night and report will be posted tonight.

So yes Wednesday is still on wednesday here in sunny Scotland.

More seriously I will be out of the loop from 23rd June for at least a week so please autoskip me until I post that I am back on-line!!

ralph

Ah, just wanted to ask. If you post soon, I'll play this evening. Tomorrow I will have no time.

Unfoirtuntely it will be post work then kids to bed (this is what left me insufficent time after playing last night to report ) so I would guess around 2200 GMT

Ralph

Humm, that'll be around 23 for me. Could be late but we'll see, I think I can postpone my sleep a little ;)

Pre Turn Report
Not terribly themed but I had a Publius ready and raring to go so speed seemed of the essence

Issues

We are still :hammers: poor and need to expand, our economy can handle expansion if controlled.

Our Macemen can’t take down Russian cities without severe losses (which as we are :hammers: poor are hard to bear) so attacking Russia will have to wait for Knights. If we look at Yaroslavl even with catting down all its defences are current attackers would just bounce off so they go on to Pillaging duty

Barb Cities now have Longbows in them so we need to clamp down on Fog so no more spawn

Ning has war weariness unhappiness

Plan

Try and tackle the above!! We have stacks of workers so we may use some just to remove fog! (Don’t worry I am not bonkers!!)

workerslots.jpg

Turn 0-1 Catapult despatched to Ning to tackle unhappiness, move from food to hammers in Ning as no point in it growing yet and we need its forge.

Switch Publius Fury from galley (0 hammers invested as Knight seems more important)

Turn 2

Meet Caesar, no need to tell you he is more advanced and powerful than us

caesar.jpg

Turn 3

Barbarian Longbow man pops up!!

barblongbow.jpg

Turn 4

Our Mace destroys Barbarian Longbow

Turn 5

Continue Pillaging around Yaroslavl

Turn 6-7

Coffee as I clear fog and despatch the Knights that have started to our Northern Front

Turn 8-10

Discover Barb cities are no joke!!

babrnojoke.jpg

We now have 4 Knights heading north for Publius’ to apply the :hammer: with and Engineering is due in 1. No cities razed as this would have been moderately suicidal with the Knights that have only now appeared!!

Now who said all our Keshiks were dead??/ One was alive and well and is about to carry on the glorious tradition against a Barb Horse Archer

keshiksdead.jpg

Get ready with those horses here

I somehow messed up most of my screenshots. So now just a short writeup without many imagery from me:

I discovered Engineering and Banking. We're now researching on Music which leads us to Military Tradition.

Further more I razed this Russian enclave to the west, I forgot the name and the screen is lost :sad:

Knights are now coming from all over Mongolia. Currently many knights are pillaging in Russia until enough are there to achieve something.

Last but not least from this situation - the only screenshot:

Good turns Pvblivs. Now to get some life back in here

Roster:
1) Strauss
2) Ralph_Jackson
3) Pvblivs --> just played
4) blastoidstalker --> UP!
5) Kanga_DU --> on deck

Well I can't play it for another day or so in any case, so Blastoid gets some extra time it seems.... :p

Well, blastoid's 24-hour limit is up. And since I'm very strict in these things:mischief: , we move to the next player. Since I consider Kanga's post an auto-skip for at least today, so that means I'm up again! I'll try to squeeze it in before Spain-France, if I can't make it I'll play afterwards (or during if it's another dead-boring match).

Roster:
1) Strauss --> UP!
2) Ralph_Jackson --> auto-skipp until 30th June at least
3) Pvblivs --> on deck
4) blastoidstalker --> skipped for missing his turnset (shame on you!)
5) Kanga_DU --> auto-skipped

I played 6 turns, you'll see why below.

Inherited turn (1610 AD): Micromanage some cities a bit.

Turn 1 (1613 AD):
Preparing the attack on Yaroslavl’ and surrounding Nubian.

Turn 2 (1616 AD): Capture and raze Nubian at the cost of 1 Maceman (at like 90% odds again, what is it with me and barbarians?)

Turn 3 (1619 AD): Start bombarding Yaroslavl’.

IBT: Refuse Caesar’s request to join in his war against Persia (which he starts this turn)

Turn 4 (1622 AD): Yaroslavl’ is captured and burned down at the cost of two Cats.

In order to counter War Weariness, I switch most cities from building military to building Theatres. I also increase the luxury slider to 10%. We need bigger cities and Theatres will allow them to grow 1 to 2 sizes larger at 10% luxury, and of course larger as we move up the culture slide when we have the funds for it.

Turn 5 (1625 AD): Most of our units start on their way to Moscow while some remain to heal.

IBT: Peter sends a Longbowman and no less than 4 Catapults at 1 Knight, while there were some (small) stacks that he could have attacked.

Turn 6 (1628 AD): Well, it turns out Peter could afford to lose some units....

With our lack of Catapults (only 1 at the front and about 2 in the homeland) this will be a VERY tough nut to crack. We could of course try bringing Peter down for good, but we do have the option of making peace with Peter and turning towards our other rivals (preferably Cyrus)

The advantages:
- Peter is willing to offer everything he's got for peace.
- we are easily capable of defending our homes when the enemy can reach us
- if we declare on Cyrus, we will stay on Julius' good side until we are ready to take him on

As long as we declare on someone the same turn we make peace with the Czar, it's okay by the rules. It could be considered an 'exploit', since we can't reach the others for a while and vice versa. On the other hand, if we finish off Russia, we probably won't be able to reach the others yet either and the war will be equally 'phony'.

Give me your opinions on this please.

Go for Cyrus if you think that's better. It would be better for us I think. Can found new cities with reduced WW?

I like your suggestion Strauss. For some reason I was thinking that we had to remain at war with who ever we declared on, however on rereading the variant rules your ploy is a very good move I think. I won't hurt to actually have a potential trading partner. I suggest that we should get caravels up asap as well and make wider contact.

Turn 6 (1628 AD) (continued): We make peace with Peter. He is forced to give Mongolia 120 gold, 1 gpt, World Map, Paper and Compass.
I immediately dial up Cyrus and declare war on him. War weariness is gone for the moment (to my surprise: I thought war weariness only went away the turn after a war was ended, however that is apparently only the case if the enemy is wiped out and no formal peace is made).

Turn 7 (1631 AD): Research is finished on Music, start on Optics. I start pulling back the majority of our troops to our homeland in order to cut supply costs, I leave a small garrison to keep an eye on Peter.
I also start a Settler in Ning-Hsia. The site where once stood the Russian enclave seems like a nice spot.

It would have a good amount of both food and shields, and would be a great place to start building Galleons once we locate an enemy to the west.

Turn 8 to 10 (1634-1640 AD): Nothing special happens. I chop some forests to speed production, move units back into our borders and start moving some towards the barbarian cities.

With Optics due in Kanga's turnset, we have the option of going for Astronomy after that. Cyrus is weakening fast and will probably fall below us in power in a matter of turns, and if Julius doesn't let up for a while he could be an easy invasion target. Meanwhile, Gandhi's power isn't much greater than ours either, although his tech lead could soon give him more advanced units. Julius is the most powerful civ at the moment, so we'll just leave him alone for a while.

Going straight for Astronomy is a risky option though, at the moment it will take us 30 turns (after Optics' 4 remaining turns) to research it. We made a comparable gamble with Horseback Riding in the early game and that wasn't a huge success. So we could also wait a while, research some other techs we could use and go for Astronomy later when it's cheaper.

I would rather research something that is of use for us NOW. That is: Increases research, decreases our costs, allows us to build more cities and to make more money and beakers.

Astronomy is as a tech too weak. We would not invade anyone as long as we've got land to settle on our own continent.

Maybe we even let out some cheap techs for Peter to trade with us. We need not research everything ourselves. Somehow we've got to get him nice...

Furthermore "the city site that looks so great" would be a nice to name after me again. As it was me who razed the city there. How about Pvbliopolis? :D
