Strategies never obsolete

To follow up on what others have said, I find this to be a great forum. Some people can be brash, but those same people also do some truly altruistic things. I posted a game, and a number of deity players downloaded it, opened it, and posted suggestions with screenshots...within a few hours. Definitely helped improve my game, which is really what makes playing the game fun.

At first, I did find it confusing that advice has changed. I would Google something (like "Civ4 should I build courthouses?") and read a really interesting thread generally saying yes (maybe with some caveats). Then I would go to the current threads and see offhand comments like ("and that's why courthouses are almost never worth it"), but after a while I got used to looking at the date of the thread.

The one "sad" part about it is that it is very hard to be part of the discovery process now since there has been so much time put into optimizing strategies. I can imagine this can be jarring for someone who took a long break, and before they left the forum was part of that process. That is what happens with old games. Probably, if you want to be part of engaging discussions about new ways to play, you might need to pick a specific interesting subset (I think there was something recently on isolated starts, maybe there is some other area people can work on....)

I did notice in the game I posted not all of the advice was consistent so there are still discussions to be had...

Yeah there is no written script anywhere to say how each game should be played. It's what you pick up over the years and how you play. You got some great advice that game. Not every player in that thread played at deity.

There is a learning curve for all players. Some players may start at Noble and find it the right challenge for them. Others will edge up to higher levels till they reach the point where they are comfortable winning at a cerrtain level. Not every player will be able to play and win at deity. Not every player is interested in micro of cities, workers, using slavery to it's max among other game features.

Civ 4 is so rich with content and that is why some players are still here 12 years on.
