Settle Lisboa 3 W of starting position as Capitol (Portuguese squatting)
It should be noted that squatting is impossible in the current version of RFC.

Actually, theoretically it's possible to squat Lisboa if you put all your units right next to the Portugal spawn zone, declare war by refusing to leave, then kill all the units but make sure you end up back in Spanish territory and not in Lisboa to avoid a flip. Any unit left behind will be deleted. Leaving Lisboa empty might sound dangerous, so guilds and knights are a must, as well as several well promoted catapults. Obvious that would involve lots of roads around that area and forgoing an early collapse of France.

But as described above, that squatting technique went away long ago...and is called cheating now. :(

First of all, i am still playing the unpatched version (no internet on the PC i play Civ).

We could adapt and have Lèon or Barcelona as the Capitol and resist the switch to Portugal flip.
Losing 1 turn at the begining, and being ready for the Portugueses should be manageable.
As suggested by AnotherPacifist might need to research Guild earlier and delay Compass / Optic

As for what is cheating or not. The answer is very relative.

Playing the scenario is cheating. We know where the Aztec will spawn, when, we know that taking Rome is worth it, we know all that and design a strategy according to it. Even knowing the game is cheating we know that researching Mining will allow us to research Bronze Working later. We even know in advance what we need to do to win.

Imagine playing a RAND game without any idea what your UHV conditions are without any idea or the tech tree. That would be no cheating. It is just not doable.

That said i dont consider that doing anything the game mechanic allow me to do it is "more" cheating than the above.

Opening the WB to add, delete ressources, units on the other hand is clear cheating.

Waraddict, where were you 1 year ago when I tried to convince Rhye of not branding our favorite exercise as a cheat? :)

Ryazan (one south) is the city I prefer over Moscow. Other cities that should be settled are Kiev, and a city on the west coast (like Vilnius). The city up north near the furs is also good for early happiness, though it won't grow very quickly.

Send the 4th settler to Budapest. :D

Found Moskva, Kiev (1W of Wheat), Tver or Novgorod and Riga, Talinn or Klaipeda. You can found St. Peterburg later.

Next cities (if possible) should be L'vov (3W of Kiev), Budapest (1SE of Deer) and Caricyn (1E of Wheat). Sankt-Peterburg is best 2 south of copper, especially if you have Talinn.

Sofia is also a good choice, but Ottomans tend to get obsessed with taking this city, and it will be highly influenced by their culture. Better to be founded later, though you might be lucky and the Greeks could save you the job.

My choices for first four cities would be: Moscow, Kiev, Tallin and L'vov. Also, in earlier versions of the mod, there used to be a barb city around. Conquering it would save you a lot of trouble, and if I remember well, you could get the oil in the lake nearby. If not, Bakú would be a good choice for a fifth city, or a fourth one, if there is no available space southern.

Why do the strategy guides all indicate the Maya should go south? I had a recent game as the Maya where I went north and grabbed the good midwest city sites. I'm not that good and got the conqueror's event but dealt with them. I've gone south and I've gone north. North is better.

The thing is that in the north you have quite a lot of dog soldiers, who continue to spawn almost throughout the the whole game - they can be quite a nuisance, and you risk being sandwiched between them and the aztecs. But you have a point, and I personally always build at least a "Chicago-city" before the aztecs spawn. It depends on what you're trying to achieve also though.

And avoiding the conq.-event is really not that hard, especially if you dont go south and thus only have to send out three sea units to patrol and meet the europeans before they see a land square of yours.

I agree, I got sloppy with the conquerors. I was patrolling when I should have kept ships stationary.

Dogs in the north aren't much of a problem - they come in twos at Viceroy and three at Monarch. They're pretty easily countered. If you go North, you should only be sandwiched and split by the Aztecs for ten turns. For a number of reasons, they should be eliminated.

I think North would work better for any victory condition. Aside from building the Temple of Kukulucan, the Maya would play pretty much the same way until about 1500. I'm wondering if I should post a short strategy guide for new players here for the Maya going North. I had a much higher score going North and an easier game. I achieved UHV first going south, but struggled every step of the way.

Be sure to found Huaxyacac as capital and have feudalism before the Aztecs spawn so you can conquer them quickly. I would recommend to expand further north if you are stable enough.

I once got a Mayan Empire from Olximché to New Orleans to Vancouver, also a city in Hawaii. All cities where founded by me, so the last 2 names where different.
But that was a previous version, so I don't know if that's possible now.

Actually, neither north nor south. Center is best :D

So, I'm trying to play as Russia. Any advice on what starting cities I should try for?

Moskva is the obvious choice, I know. I decided on St. Petersburg and Kiev for the next two, but I can't decide where to send the fourth settler.

the best for me are Moskva (all around), Sankt Peterburg (commerce), Minsk (settler farm), Kherson (production). Later Stavropol and I think Yaroslavl (or whatever is the name of the city north of Moscow along the river with furs).
