Hello,

I am having a small problem. I am stuck on a small island (happend twice) and after building 5 cities the island is full. I want to explore the oceans but I can't move my ship on the ocean squares. Is there a way to force them onto the ocean or do I have to wait until I discover astronomy ? This is a very long time.

Thx for you reply

Remeber that you can direct towards only astronomy thanks to the nice way of moving through the tech tree. Other than that just take advantage of the lack of units you need to maintain and focus on making your cities great!

Small islands suck, but at least in Civ4 you can stay pretty powerful and defend yourself when you do meet another nation. I always restarted games in Civ3 if I was on an island of any size by myself. I tend to play on continents or panagea so I can get all my enemies in 1 spot. ;) Turning off tech trading will also let you stay abreast with everyone else even if you don't meet them right away.

Hmm, if you can fit five cities, that's a decent sized island. One game I started on an island of only 4 squares, but fortunately there were nearby islands so I did fairly well. But the answer to your question, no, you cannot force a galley or caraval into an ocean square, unlike the previous civs; you will have to research astronony. But if you research enough techs from your current age, techs in future ages go down in cost.

Nope, you have to wait for astronomy. Just go to the science advisor screen and click on astronomy. The game will set your research path to get to astronomy fastest.

I just mentioned this in another thread but I'll repeat since it would be highly beneficial here. Last night I discovered galleys /can/ enter ocean squares, provided your cultural boundaries extend out over them.

It may not make a difference if you're really isolated, but cultural borders seem to grow pretty quickly in Civ4 and there's the culture bomb tactic as well... it just /might/ be enough for you to manage to reach another coast before Astronomy. Of course, you'd have to engage in speculation as to in which direction that other coast might be. :D

Leave it to the power of culture to make sailing the oceans safe. :crazyeye:

The first civilization I played was Rome (Tutoral), which I highly reconmend
for beginners. Map Size: Tiny, Rivals: 1 (India).
