F U N A N

At a time when Han Dynasty was at its peak and the the Roman Emperor Claudius was conquering Britain, legend has it that an Indian Brahman named Kaundinya was following the instructions he'd received in a dream. In keeping with those instructions, he selected a magic bow from a Hindu temple and set sail for SE Asia. There he defeated a local queen named Soma, whose father was "King of the Cobras", and married her. The royal line of Bnam (Old Khmer from "the mountain" was started. The kingdom became known by the Sinicized form of its name: Funan.

The legend captures well the pattern of history in the region. There is a mix of local tradition and Indian ideas. The Cobra was considered by many in SE Asia to be the lord of the earth. The legend of that dynasty - with dual legitimacy from both the Brahman and the snake - was adopted by many kingdoms in the region. Funan was the first to achieve regional and even international importance.

The people of Funan were probably austro-asiatic, related to the Mons of Burma and the modern Khmers who eventually displaced them. Funan's capital was at Vyadhapura, near the modern city of Phnom Penh. Funan developed an efficient navy and became prosperous by regulating the sea trade between China and India. In this, Funan became a model for later kingdoms in the region: Sri Vijaya, the Javanese Sailendra kingdom, and Malacca.

After the reign of Fan Shih-man, considered the greatest of the Funan kings, his successors sent embassies to both China and India. The kingdom adopted Sanskrit as the court language and encouraged both Hinduism and Buddhism. This probably accelerated the process of Indianization in the region, as vassal courts emulated Funan.

A Chinese ambassador, K'ang T'ai, described Funan as having brick-walled cities. He recorded that the people had a knowledge of metalwork and agriculture, but said that they walked about the city "naked and barefoot". K'ang T'ai also described a judicial system, libraries and archives, and taxation in Funan. In typical Chinese fashion, though, he concluded that the Funanese were barbarians. Funan established a tributary relationship with China in 357 AD.

At the peak of the kingdom, in the early third century, Funan control what is now southern Vietnam, Cambodia, central Thailand, northern Malaysia, and southern Myanmar. Although Funan collapsed under the pressure of Khmer immigration into the region, Vyadhapura and nearby Angkor remained the most important urban center in the region for perhaps 13 centuries.

Funan collapsed in the sixth century and was replaced by the Chenla kingdom of the Khmers. Funan's royal family, however, survived and fled to Java where it lived in obscurity for almost 300 years before re-emerging as the Sailendra Dynasty. The Sailendras, in turn, intermarried with other royal families in Java and Sumatra. Today, many of the nobels and sultans of Malaysia and Indonesia can count the kings of Funan among their ancestors.

It was night in Trondheim, the capital of Scandinave, and the expedition to sack Edinborough had just started their voyage west. Sven was reading reports of the expeditions to colonize the Baltic Islands, and they were progressing well.
Footsteps were heard, someone was running towards Svens bedroom. Sven picked up his sword and cut the head off of the man who came running in through the door with a sword in his hand. Sven picked the mans head up and looked at it. He looked familiar...
"Oh crap.... oh well, no need to cry over spilled milk" Sven said as he saw that the man he had just killed was his trusted messenger and the sword he had seen was infact a scroll. Sven picked up the scroll and proceeded to read it. It was an intelligence report from the spies in Pictland. Apparently, Edinborough doesn't even exist! "What schmuck came up with the idea to raid Edinborough?" though Sven. "Oh yes, it was me... well it was a pretty good idea when i think about it" he tought.

Negotiations to ally with the British against the Picts had not gone well, and the local bartender Thorleif said it was because the British resent our "culture". Sven did not know what this "culture" thing really meant, but by gods he wanted it.

well, i would welcome you as a player, but would have to direct you into taking a nation that is not either the franks or the Ostrogoths- the ostrogoths are a current federat of the Visigoths- and so while they still technically count as thier own nation, are, in this case, closer to becoming one with the visigoths to make a unfied gothic nation- assuming das can please them on the chrstianity problem that he's getting friction with them about... (and the franks are off limits just in case erez comes back)

anyway, I'll have new stats posted eventually, in fact there might be some within the hour that i write this- however, as always, you need to get your orders in soon, as for most of today I will be out, and so cannot go about my usual buisness of starting the storiers from as soon as the first orders are in, and amending the storiesas needed as more orders come in word.

Oh,poo...I was going to create lombardy as the Ostrogoths in real life did :p

actually, it would be the lombards who created lomabardy :p

there are plenty of nations- and dont be shy about choosing anation who has no stats up yet- all the players here except two did that, and because of it, I've made trhem stronger then what thier natiosn would have been if thye had just been NPC's

'Twere the Ostrogoths that were nicknamed Lombards because they settled into lombardy ;)

but they werent- there was an indipend germic tribe named the lomabrds who where employed by the eastern Roman empire to help them reqonoure the western Empire- long story short, some lombard famillies settled in Italy, and eventually turned on the Byzantines/Eastern Roman empire, creating what we know as lombardy- not no ostrogoths :p

the lombards were a suivi tribe who invaded italy AFTER the eastern romans had destroyed the ostrogoth kingdom. they conquered most of northern italy

Hmm...See!?The Ostrogoths were Lombards before their time!

yes, both invadeing italy, and eventually getting crushed by the state who should properlly rule the area ;)

anyway, the lomabards are an option to join as- just look at this first page map- it has all the nation options up there for it

*it being nations to join up as ;)
