Hmm... I'm not having any problems getting to Sulla's homepage. But if you are, you can goto http://www.civfour.com and download the whole thing in PDF form.

Hi people

Im new to Civ 4. Havent played the Civ series since No.1 came out on the Atari ST!!

Anyway I love the site, its gotta be the busiest forum ive ever been on!!

Ive not played the game yet as I have to do the tutorial. I layed it last night for 30mins or so but decided to go to bed, so I saved my progress hoping to pick it up again tonight and finish it but to my amazement, there isnt an option within the Tutorial section to Load Game??!!

I went to single player mode and found the Load Game option. I found my game from last night but when ity loaded up, the game restored to my save point but the tutorial was not part of it anymore!!

Can anyone tell me about the tutorial?? Can I save it or do I basically have to go thru it in 1 go??

Thanks

ps.. i posted a thread on this but thought it may get answered better in here

As far as I know, you have to go through it in one go. But it's not that long, it only shows you the basics but not a whole game. You can continue after the 'tutorial' part has ended and then save it and after wards reload the save. I must say that although I played the tutorial, I didn't continue the game very long after the tutorial part. It would be a very very easy game. At some point my only opponent had one size 3 city and I had 7 cities with Rome size 11 and I thought let's play a real game. But as you are relatively new to the series, it could be a good idea to continue the tutorial a bit after the 'tutorial' part of it has stopped.

Have fun and welcome to CFC! :band:

I second this as a good idea. If you're already "getting" many of the essential concepts, you'll be able to wipe out Gandhi and end the scenario soon enough.

And if not, it's advisable to continue playing in this small-scale, unthreatening environment until you do catch on a little more.

Enjoy...we've come a long way since Civ I (I played it on my monochrome Mac laptop...I'd have been jealous of you running it on the ST!).

For the past few days I've been reading through the walkthrough and this thread. The walkthrough is really great but I also liked very much Sulla's and Sirian's answers to the great number of questions posted here.

My first impression from theCFC site is that of problems with graphics cards. This walkthrough shows it to be a great game that I'll buy as soon as I can. (Which unfortunately looks like it won't be until december in Brazil). Reading all these articles help me during the tormenting wait. :)

finally have been able to read the guide.....very good job...learned a few things too..Never thought about dedicating cities to Great person production before!

Sullla, thank you so much for taking the time to write such a detailed and helpful story of a Civ IV game. I love your write-ups, and this one was as interesting as your other Civ III write-ups. Please, keep up the excellent writing, as I've read everything Civ related at least twice!

My favorite is still RBCiv #18 (I believe it's #18):
Spoiler Clarifying which competition reveals spoiler info :
The one where Greece and Egypt pull a Poland 1939 on your poor Babylonian empire, yet little backward Ghandi pulls off a victory. Simply an amazing game. I've read that one too many times to count.

Fun stuff!

Civ 1 on Atari ST.... memories, memories. You remember the four floppies it came on? I always thought it looked better on the ST than on a average PC of those days... :) I still have them both, The atari ST and civ 1 for atari st....

Hi everyone, nice to see a few faces from the past too (RegentMan!)

A quick update: most of the pictures on the Walkthrough have had their hosting changed from my main site to here at CivFanatics, where Thunderfall has generously provided hosting. This shouldn't make any difference whatsoever in reading it (let me know if a picture isn't showing up properly), but what it WILL do is cut down on the bandwidth requirements for my site and HOPEFULLY prevent it from crashing. (Crossing fingers. :))

I also added a link to the Succession Game Sirian and I are playing on my website. For those finished with the Walkthrough and looking to read something else, you may want to check it out. We're having a blast, and it's been a wild game. :)

Hey Sulla. I play alot of multiplayer now (humans are alot more fun to play against then the AI). So I was wondering when you'd get around to showing some multiplayer games off. Being a total warmonger in multi I'm curious to see what people do to counter this, and I'd also like you to show some folks that guarding thier new cities w/ 1 archer/warrior doesn't cut it in multi. Hope you get around to that soon, especialy if you have a good 6 person FFA or team game, like to see how you "pros" do it.

I'll be writing up some MP games down the line, never fear. One of the groups I'm involved with is already planning a weekly game, and Realms Beyond will undoubtedly be organizing some of its own co-op games down the road too.

There are a lot of empty parts on my website at present to leave room for additional expansion in the upcoming months. :)

In the meantime, here's a short picture from a game that I was involved in last night:

MP-1110-1.jpg

3 teams of 2 playing Always War on a Small Great Plains map. I was teamed with Cobra, playing against teams of Onan/Mo_D and Rob/AI (we only had 5 players, and Rob couldn't stay for too long, so he got stuck with the AI). I started in the southwest corner of the map, gambled that I would be fairly isolated (and was right, I've played this map too many times!) so I started with a worker build and ran min defense to get a jump on my growth curve. We researched Meditation first (I founded Buddhism), then went after the worker techs. Cobra snagged one of Rob's workers very early on, which jumped us ahead of the game. Here I'm in the process of building the Oracle - which one of the other players stole away from me with 0 turns remaining! (We tied for the wonder and he got it - hey, everything doesn't always work out for me either! ) I then went to the F9 screen to check to see who built the wonder - and Civ4 crashed on me. Couldn't find the game afterwards in the lobby so that was that. I think that there's a bug associated with the F9 wonders screen in MP, but not 100% certain of that.

Anyway, fun stuff. Rest assured I'll have more to say on this in the future up on the website. :D

How exactly are ties worked out in MP games? I presume in SP it's the same as Civ3 - if you the human gets to 1 turn remaining (tech, Wonder, anything), then they're guaranteed there first. But with MP...?

Nice starting location in that pick. I see you beelined for Iron, usually what I do, but I'm a warmonger, I was curious to see if others do that too. That screen seems to show 3 irons in your imediat vicinity, does this mean someone else got shorted (it would suck to be w/o metal in a team game unless you were sitting in the back booming while your partner did all the fighting).

Say, Sullla, in your walkthrough you say "And on the "Dan Quayle" screen, I earned the rank of Augustus Caesar, not too bad. There are better ranks, of course, but this one's pretty good" which I don't quite understand. I thought Augustus Caesar was the highest rank?

Sullla, it's a fairly clear walkthrough but IMO, you should have played using a greater variety of unit in the modern age--tanks and artillery are just late-game equivalents of previous unit types. Would have liked to see you use some air units as well as spy units (I don't say sea units because from what I've heard, there's nothing to see as they have actually been further simplified from Civ3).

It also could have used a bit more on trade.

Great walkthrough, Sulla. Really helped me to understand the new aspects of Great People and Religion a lot faster than I would have 'got it' through playing. Not all aspects are covered, but I think it's more important to focus on a few aspects rather than muddle the picture.

Sulla's walkthrough is very useful to me. Civ4 is my first iteration of Sid Meier's Civilization, and I think those like me need to read this walkthrough. But industrial, modern age's walkthrough is not sufficient. I expect you to supplement it. I agree with Yoshi
