I think we like to read stories of others' games, maybe write story of ours...

Now:

We have Replay at the end of the game - coludn't we get a written summary of the history we have just played? I don't thinbk it would be that hard to make the programme do and generate that, maiing a text out of it...

It could be optional as what to include in it... :)
like:
- city foundation
- Wonders built
- first building of an improvement
- own wars started - finished
- MPPs with dates (from x til y)
- trade embargoes (from x til y)
- era changing
- government changing
- palace chaging
- Forbidden Palace built (Capitol moves...)
- contact with other civs
- ending of other civs
- military and scientific leaders
...etc

It could go like this:

BC 4000
Capitol Paris founded

BC 3000
The nation of the English met

BC 2750
Building of the first temple in our civilization

BC 2500
Building of the first barrack in our civilization

BC 2000
War against England started

and so on...

p.s.
Well, it could be more storytelling text - it is just the question of programming... :)

I would really like this. The game King of Dragon Pass had an unsurpassed verison of this. It read like a story.

This would also help for analyzing GOTMs etc.

Well... I am kind of new to the CivFanatics - does anybody here know how to transfer ideas to Firaxis? :) maybe this one - among ong others?...

One hopes they are simply reading this forum as they design the game. Either that, or the moderators are passing our ideas on to them.

The narrative summary idea is brilliant. Who knows, it might provide budding authors with outlines for alternate-history novels: ideas with which to challenge Harry Turtledove and Kim Stanley Robinson...

I'd be a sucker for something like this. The best thing about Civ is creating your own history, and being able to read about would be awesome.

Also, it would be nice to have some statistics - like how many units you've built/lost/killed, wars you've won or lost, improvements you've built, thing's you'd done first - that kind of stuff.

Now, this is an idea I support wholeheartedly. It shouldn't be too hard to generate from information available in the savefile and would add a fair bit to ease of narration in a lot of ways.

Of course, if the Python scripting is as good as some of us hope, and enough information is stored in the save file, this might be something that could be done by the outside modding community.

Two thumbs up.

Civ2 already has a casualities list available, for all unit types built by yourself and each nation with which you have an embassy. It also has an economic summary, listing the number of each type of improvement in your empire to calculate the overall cost of maintainence. Bringing these features back would be simple.

Or, even better, allow one to save replays and looking at them at will.

My civ games (from begining to end) last about five hours (sometimes more). I'm not going to watch a replay for five hours!

5 hours? Try 8, try 10... for some conquests, try 18.

... ugh.

I was refering to the replay that plays at the end of the game. Now, if you're too, I'm very afraid.

This is a good idea, but it may increase the size of save files significantly if you want to add stuff like building a temple. I'd say great/small wonders are enough. Deals would be nice to have too.

This will save SGers a lot of time.

I agree. It isn't nessesary to have "First temple built" or something like that

Do people remember the first temple build in a country? In history books to you see "In the year 712 the first temple in our country was built."?

Again, it's a question of KISS. Just how much detail do people want in the game summary?

Which improvements were completed in which turn, and by whom, might be worth knowing - if, for example, you want to chart the progress of your scientific or cultural program.

But surely, no-one wants to know which tile a particular unit was located in at a given time..?

I disagree, Pariah. I think improvements should not be in the game summary. For the entire summary I would be reading: "Temple built in Munich" and "Barracks built in Kyoto".
