Ha Ha I finally made a breakthrough in the AI behavior last night while testing for DST.

The Americans were simply plying back and forth between Hawaii and San Deigo and between Sydney and Guadalcanal without going for the Jap islands. It was irritating the hellout of me as it was already 1944 and they had dozens of capital ships . Then I got this idea, I changed the role of all the capital ships to Attack from naval superiority and instantly their destination changed from Hawaii to Amoy or Hong Kong.

My next postulation, which I haven't tried yet, is that I need to change the role of the sea transports to Attack too, even though they have zero attack. This might solve the problem of poor AI performance in Island type Maps. Heck, maybe I'll have to go back and fix my Star Wars scenario.

Sorry, no improvement in intelligence of troop shipments noticed.

A lot of the AI is hard-coded so I assume that giving any sea unit a hold greater than zero will cause the AI to use it as a transport.

Your idea is good if you want the AI sending ships at cities but it also allows the Coastal Fortress exploit whereby the Japanese player just has to build a Fortress in Amoy or Hong Kong and place a large garrison there; in a few turns, the whole American fleet will be wiped out. Remember, this AI is quite ********.

Mr. Tuttle,

final analysis, besides an attack role, the transport must be given an attack factor (of 1) as well, and the submarine flag so they don't attack cities. This works very well and the AI attacks with amphibious units repeatedly. I will be using this forumla in the next release version of DST.

I saw your post in your DTK thread. Very interesting. I'll keep this in mind. I might try this in a scenario I'm thinking of doing. My pirates need to loot and pillage... :)
