Survivalists; Why do they crave bad news?

I was invited to a forum by a friend that is was based on outdoors activities and, yes, survival studies. Now, what I mean by that is, surviving hurricanes, tornadoes, ice storms, blackouts, and yes, there was discussion about economic collapses and some other more serious threats. But, it was pretty tame in years past. Recently, there are a lot of new faces and all of the sudden the forum is all about conspiracies, birthers, and just crazy stuff. Two watershed events that seems to have changed things were the recession and the election of our President.

Seriously, these people are acting crazy, the older members are gone, and it seems like they crave bad news and disaster. Did my forum just get hijacked by Radical End of Times Christians or what? Why do these people seem to get a hard-on for end of the world scenarios and shake like giddy little children when bad news rolls in? It has even gotten to the point that they make up bad news or take it from some extremely questionable "news" site to get their fix. WTH?

Everyone is fascinated by disaster. It makes sense that those who love battling extreme condititions would be even more enthralled by such events.

If its one thing that people love its confirmation of their world views. The more outlandish their views the more desperate they are for confirmation. Making it up is sometimes the only way to get their fix.

By the type of place you're describing then I suggest what you look out for are words like groid, mohammedan, mozzies, or beliefs such as Obama (alternatively: 0bama, zerobama, obongo) being a secret muslim.

If you find lots of those then your survival website has gone from extreme weather survival to Rapture/Collapse of America/Invasion by UN survival.

Cos basically, when a disaster happens, these smucks can go out with a rifle and shoot neegras, and say you thought they were part of the problem.

Conformation bias? "If I've spent some much time and money getting ready for when the **** hits the fan then..."

With all respect, Senethro, I do not wish to say.

Stormfront was originally set up by meterologists to collect information and discuss on survivalsit issues.
However, the fact that they talked a lot about snow (being based in Montana) meant they referred a lot to the meterological term "white power" which is the degree to which snow will blind due to the reflection of the sun on snowflakes.
Evidently, Nazis searching "white power" ended up on the site, and eventually made themselves at home, converting the original scientists into race-baiters.

This is one of those situations where truth will be what I wish to believe rather than what I learned from a reliable source. Thank you.

Apocalypse is a common motif in group cohesion because it plays on a basic human desire: to live in important times. We all want to think that we got the best luck when it comes to being born at the right time. It is nothing more than trying to make oneself feel special. Chicken Little.

Real survivalists do not horde powdered milk, batteries and guns; they live a life that prepares a resume for the job.

That was one of the best posts I've read in a week.

Well, I spoke to the site administrator and he essentially said the following.

I understand your concern, but the membership of the board has more than doubled since these lunatics started showing up and I'd rather have a larger membership on the board than useful information. Okay. Bye-bye then!

Whatever justifies their paranoia.

I bet you won't find many other social liberals who are doing career planning based on the upcoming armageddon.

Someone likes his ads.

It's the American Way. Forget your principles. Go for the profit.
