Swedish civilization

I like the idea of a longship (dragonship/drakeship/viking ship), although I think it should be saved for a viking civilization. The Swedes of that time were vikings as well, but the were called varjags and travelled mostly to the east (even reaching Constantinopel via the rivers), thus not being classic vikings.

The viking ship wasn't a ship designed for war though, so I'm not so sure about the attack of 2. I would prefer to add an extra point of movement instead. This would enable a viking civilization to cross straights and seas easier as they could move two squares from the shoreline and still be able to get back without risk. Thus they could travel farther, just as they did historically.

Karl XI should be the leader, he builded up the caroline army and a modern and cheap jetfighter should be the unit. Sweden is one of few countries wich still can build its own topmodern jetfighters. Maybe Tunnan or Draken.:goodjob:

I also think that the swedes should be Militaristic, one of Europes greatest powers for long time, and Industrius.:goodjob:

Var kan namnet Vaasa komma ifrån:confused:
Kaaaanske från det moderna Sveriges gundare Gustav Vasa.

By the way, Great mod! :goodjob:

Or how about experimental Jet fighter as special unit that could go down when they are showing it to the public? :D

Just kidding...

I think some sort of musketman or cavalry unit could present Swedish and could start it's golden age. It would also work better when put to middle age era as Sweden hasn't really been war during industrial or modern times or has it?:king:

No, you're right.
Sweden has had peace for more then 100 years and it's "golden age" was during the 30 year war until the death of Karl XII 1712

i´m going to create a new unit for my mod, since the cannon can´t trigger a golden age. so this is what i´m planing to do is a caroline by modifing the industrial leader´s graphics. it will problary be like the cavalry but sweden will get it with metallurgy. what do you think about that? i would rather have a unit from the thirty year war, but the most outstanding cavalry were from finland and i want to leave the finns out of this mod so it can be used together with a finnish mod, the infantary did barely have uniforms and the light artillery can´t trigger a golden age.

i´ll maybe rename gustav II adolf to gustavus adolphus. any opinions about that? i would really like to know what people outside sweden think.

preview of the swedish uu the caroline. btw, i made that poor bastard blonde:D .

Great looking unit.
I think it is good that you are changing the Special Unit to Carolines. The one thing of swedish history I remember, is when u kicked our ass (I'm a Dane), and that was with exactly that unit.
Good work by the way, it's nice seeing the nordic contries in civ too...

it seems like the correct english word for "karolin" is carolean. the unit will problary be a musketman with one extra move (2.4.2).

That Carolean unit...
But how about one extra defence instead of that one extra move?

Gustav II Aadolf changed the tactics used by that time so the firepower of infantry unit was great. However the attacking was still problem and was made primarily by the light cavalry.
Defence was the greatest weapon as infantry units were like moving fortresses some men having spears and others muskets. Normal cavalry attack of that time which was mainly load-charge-shoot-get back-reload was inefficient against firepower of swedish army.

Or...
You can give the unit some bombard rating along with normal musketman abilities as swedish army used also moveable cannons that time to give more firepower to troops. (change the first attack animation to cannon one so it looks they use as bombard)

I don't really find any good reason (historical) to give them one extra movement. Or did the logistics of swedish army of that time superior others so much?

When will the new Karolin, or Caroline, or whatever ;) animation be ready. Looking forward to add that one, should make the mod more or less complete.

Now, I might have missed it as I only browsed the topic quickly, but about the city names... Malmø and Helsingborg might be Swedish now, but they are originally Danish cities, so if you want your mod to be realistic I think you should remove those. That is just my opinion of course, but it goes hand in hand with the examples of Koenigsberg which is now in Russia IIRC but was founded by Germans. :)

I said something like that a few posts ago.

How is the Sweden mod coming along. I really look forward to playing it.

Btw, could you perhaps include civs like Denmark, Poland and Holland in the mod, and also make sure not to replace civs like Russia and Germany so I can rule the baltic sea with my mighty Swedish empire. Would be awesome!!

I originally posted this at the Karolean unit thread, but then I realized this would be a more approproate thread to post it in

it´s going a bit slow right now but as soon i´ve done my exams i´ll take up the work with the carolean again.

I have seen this thread being silent for a month. I do hope your exams are through soon anime - I'm eagerly awaiting a Swedish civ to put icing on the cake for this game.

I really like the Carolean approach (rather than any Cannon or Longship), especially if you're going to use Gustav II Adolf as the leader (not that the leader makes too much difference, since he's going to stay with the civ from 4000 BC to 2050 AD anyway).

Did you ever incorporate any Gustav II Adolf leaderhead images into the modpack? Or were they not up to par? I really like ccm02's leaderheads for Germany, France, Russia, America etc.

Keep it up, and hope that you're able to finish it off!
