Swedish National Day!

Today is also a public Holiday in Western Australia, only. The rest of the Country will celebrate the Queen's Birthday next monday. Today is Foundation Day. It marks the day when Western Australia was founded by the British. It was the day that Perth (Swan River Colony) was founded. I do find that we really should celebrate the actual first day, because Albany was the first city to be founded.

Their anthenum is in English?

Two of my great grandparents were Swedish. I guess I should have some sort of celebration but they apparently hated the place so much that they rarely said a good word about it, never went back, and changed their names so that nobody from there could find them.

Most of what I know about Scandinavia comes from my great grandmother Marie who was from Stavanger, Norway; she lived until I was 19. I don't think she ever got over her daughter getting married to a son of swedes...

But whatever, that is no reason to not have a drink later, happy National Day Sweden. :viking:

It's probably an old translation. Interestingly, they've completely mangled the first line, which more literally reads as "Thou ancient, thou free, thou mountainous North".

Yea, the translation isnt the best Ive seen. :p .

We probably should make Midsummer the national day instead of the coronation of Gustaf Vasa, midsummer is more or less an unofficial national day anyway and people dont give a **** about Gustav Vasa.

Ah, well, I guess Ill drink down a few shots of vodka with my friends and sing the anthem once or twice. But they really should have found something worthwhile to celebrate. ;)

These auto-translators are amazing!;)

Thanks, luceafarul!

It will be interesting how the national day celebrating develops from now on. It will not be much the first years, I reckon. Perhaps we've had peace for too long to "bother" about celebrating.

Btw, Denmark had their national day yesterday, congrats!

Swedes barely celebrate their national day, but my best wishes to all Swedes nevertheless!

Gustav Vasa is a somewhat controversial king, altough he is traditionally seen as a national hero and the first king of the sovereign Sweden, some (or quite many today) regard him as a tyrant.

hahahaha that's brilliant!! I've never used one before. I had no idea it would be so wildly inaccurate. Thanks, I'm gonna tred round those things in future. :D

I taught in Sweden in Ostersund for a little while in a teacher exchange. Great country. I have many friends there.

My wife is now a snus addict. Imports it via the net.

Where I live it was lots of people down town, waving flags and just being out celebrating. Kinda impressive, I didn't think that many people cared or would do something like that. :)

Me, I spent most of the day playing World of Warcraft. :p
Had my Three Crowns t-shirt on though. ;)
