Team research costs in multiplayer?

I've read various threads about how much research costs when you are on a team with another player, some people saying it costs 50% more to research than if you were alone.

Does anyone know if that is true? I can't find it referenced anywhere to be sure, also it seems like a team would still be researching 50% faster than other players/AI in the game if that were true.

Yes indeed you pay more beakers but stuff gets researched much faster. I don't know the exact numbers, but for example playing quick in team of 2 i research mining in 3 turns vs 5 turns solo.

Research costs (after difficulty and map size modifiers are taken into account):

BASE * (1 + 0.5*[NUMBER OF TEAMMATES])

So this means that for a single player games, research costs are at 100% (ie normal). For teams of two, research costs are at 150% (ie 50% more than normal). For teams of three, research costs are at 200% (ie twice the amount as normal). And so on. This also applies if you have teams of different sizes in a game - for instance, if you have two teams of three players they will both have research modifiers of 200%; but if a member of one team gets eliminated (so that the team is effectively now a team of two players), that team will now be researching at a modifier of 150%, ie their techs will be cheaper. For this reason it can be beneficial to leave a lone city standing and move onto the next teammate, to prevent that team from gaining a research advantage.

I just realised that this also means that in single player with perm alliances on, it would slow down your research if you enter a perm alliance with someone who generates less than half your amount of beakers..! That's interesting..

Yes, and you can technologically gain more benefit between multiplayer allies by just remaining seperate nations and researching seperate paths, while gifting all techs to the other player. However there are other benefits of Permanent Alliances, such as shared line of sight, shared wonder benefits, shared seat on the UN, shared victory for domination etc, shared circumnavigation benefit, and a whole host of other things.
