Tech popups

I sometimes read historical information, but I only do it once for each topic...
Thing is, practically none of that stuff is relevant after the first few games. "Can build a road?" The wheel? Really? D'oh! Forgot again!

Basically says it all.
After the first few games, I'll turn off all the optional graphics, movies, animations, etc..

Agree with topic. I enjoyed the descriptions from Civ, especially since I was young and liked history.

It would be nice to see them again. Then they make a spot under Preferences that says Don't Show Tech Desc that people can check off and everybody wins.

I'm sorry, but this just makes no sense. You don't want to look at the gameplay info because you know it already, but you're happen to "learn" about what the Wheel does over and over and over again?

No. Descriptive writing can be educational, but that's not it's only purpose.

"Can build road" or "the wheel was quickly turned to a weapon of war (etc etc)" ... one is dull, the other gets you interested.

It would have been an even better game if it had had a cleaner UI, like that of Civ4.

It had a much cleaner UI than civ4. The resolution isn't as good so the elements are blockier and larger, but, the design itself is much more spartan and features far fewer elements. If you tried to do the civ4 interface at civ1 resolution, the main screen would be a pinhole.

I too thought the civ1-style tech popups were great. I read all of them I think.

The problem with civ1 was the slow "Wise men have discovered" bit that took several seconds to load. After your first play through, even before the end of your first playthrough, that became annoying.

The simple solution is to have nice detailed tech popups which can be disabled by people who no longer want to see them.
I found the tiny scrollable text box implementaiton of tech descriptions in Civ4 very unsatisfying. If I want to read the civilopedia, I shouldn't have to read it in a tiny text box that needs to be constantly scrolled because it shows only 3 or 4 lines (I can't remember the exact number).

Total War
Argh, my poor heart... Any reference to any of those games make me cringe ever since Empire, which was a heap of feces. Also Creative Assembly is a horrible company with people who have no quarrel of backstabbing beta testers who provide critical feedback. I was in the beta and I was promised free downloadable content for my efforts, until I said that CA was letting the fans down. I even said that on the closed part of the forum where only testers could see it and bam! I was off the team without even so much as a warning.

The game was not fun to begin with, it was not fun after half a year of patching, it does not work at all - the developers admitted as much - and it deserves nothing but it's name never mentioned again, ever.

It was, but almost entirely because of the AI. There were a lot of great design features.

I'm still surprised at the number of people here who don't think that the purpose of a game UI is to make it easier to play the game.

It is not that people do not want the UI to make the game better, it is more that people are unsure what is 'better' to them. We can all agree we want a great interface that makes the entire game smooth sailing, although we may disagree over how such an interface should work...

As with many things, I like the Civ4 version and hope for a continuation with something similar. The screen should tell you the gameplay ramifications of the tech, with a little additional interest, like Leonard's voice saying, "I will to my Lord be true and faithfull..." It brightens my day. :)

I agree with OP, I still remember thats screen from
Civ1, quite iconic. I'd love to have more immersive elements.

I also wish we could opt to see the tech screens, and wonder movies in multiplayer.
