Tech Trading Question

Why is it that when I learn a new tech and offer it for trade that only one AI nation will make a trade with me for another tech? All of the other AI nations will not trade anything except the gold they have available, they won't even trade for older techs that I bypassed. Then the next turn all of the nations have the tech I traded to one nation as well as all of the other techs I was unable to trade for.

I have friendly relations with several of the other nations, a common religion and I have not declared war or demanded tribute of anyone. Is there something I'm missing?

Sounds like you might be leading the tech race -- if you are, the AI civs won't have any (or very few) techs to trade. Thus, they will offer gold instead.

As for the techs you do manage to trade suddenly being passed around, this is pretty common among the AIs. You trade/sell/give it to civ A, and the next turn civs B, C, D and E all have it.

Here's a suggestion: since that one tech is being traded away anyway, why not cut your losses and get some gold for it? Even if it's only a little, that's better than nothing. You know that civ A is going to pass it on to the others, so you might as well get your one big trade from A, and then one the same turn, sell it to B, C, D and E for as much as they'll give you.
This will also help slow/stop the other civs from moving up by trading among themselves.
