Term II - Consul of Resources and Technology Policy: Onward to the Middle Ages!

The External Consul has suggested trying to complete two military operations before switching governments. We can manipulate the tech rate of course by just researching slower, but there is also a goal of keeping tech parity or leadership. Is it possible to balance the tech rate in such a way to slow the government change without getting behind?

Well first off, I've read other emporer games and they have trouble staying caught up every time. If we are going to war, then I say keep research high without losing gold. If we grab construction, we should trade it around for big bucks/techs. Perhaps we'll get this option with currency too. We'll need to be finished up with the wars by the time we finish researching/trading for monarchy/republic/feudalism.

Counsul,

I suggest we reduce our research to a minimum. The External Counsul is attempting to slow the world's research pace, and more importantly we need the gold we’re currently spending on research to upgrade units for our imminent wars. I suspect we’re the only civ that knows every other civ in the game, so we’re in an excellent position to trade for techs should we decide we need something. IMO at this point we’re better off letting our rivals do the research, then either trade for it or buy it.

Thanks for your consideration.

Thank you for your input; it's always appreciated. Know that I take everything I hear into consideration. It is my feeling that currency and its marketplaces will greatly aid us in our government switch (which at the moment appears to be republic, an even greater aid). After currency, perhaps we can get our government at minimum science.

Dear Consul,

First thanks for the overview over the resources :goodjob:. It shows that Persia and Netherlands are the only ones that have their iron hooked up, which is significant. I hope it is not too much of a burden to keep this updated, it is much appreciated!

Of course I could not agree more with your comment on markets :D.
I think timing is key. Our research policy (self-research or trade) should be driven by what we need, and when we need it, not by how quick we can research without losing money.

I would guess the sequence of events looks like this: first war on India and Dutch, we'll be building units. After that, perhaps an expansion phase, start markets (:D) and switch governments. After that, start building some culture, continuing expansion all the time.

I find it difficult to provide a timeline for this, but my guess (based on nothing but a vague intuition) is we'll need markets and republic some 30 turns from now. We'll need literature quite some time after that.

To keep up in the tech race we don't have to self-research; trade is also possible and perhaps cheaper. Republic will probably (hopefully) be researched for us by our friends.

I finally found a nice chunk of time to update everything. I'm sorry about the long wait. My internet access has basically been cut over fifty percent. Hopefully I'll be back to normal by Monday or Tuesday.

There are tons of resource deals now available. I suspect they all go through the Dutch harbor making them extremely bad ideas for now, but it would be a good time now to discuss overall policy on acquiring resources and limits if any on things we want to sell.

Also Currency won't stay a monopoly forever, are there plans to trade it once the time is right, and at least get something out of it?

And another suggestion...

The acting external consul is planning which of our friends is the next target for annexation or downsizing. In choosing the target, I think it would be good to consider the strategic and luxury resources we might gain. Perhaps your office could look into that, and add to the discussion?

Well, I have concluded that our global trade route goes through the Indian city of Bangalore. It is quite safe as the route goes through our waters as it climbs the eastern part of the pangaea. Right now we can trade for Portuguese ivory or Mayan furs. They'll both accept currency (of course). Otherwise, Portugal will want wines and 11gpt. The Mayans will take iron and wines.

Quite safe that is unless we declare war on the Indians to finish them off or reduce them to 1 city. We need to be clear on this.

Good to know where it goes though, thanks for working that out.

Indeed. The outcome of the Indian peace treaty extension discussion will determine whether or not we can possibly engage in trade at the moment.

Well everyone, it was quite a fun term. I am glad to have been your R & T consul. Term III's thread is right here. Time for Rik to take the reins of leadership!
