I was wondering if there was any existing strategy for the terra map type that went like this:

-Focus on getting gold, avoiding wars.

-Beeline Atronomy, rush settlers to new world.

-Get state property so the costs don't kill you.

-Use universal suffrage to quickly build up your cities in the new world.

-Use your very own continent to do whatever you want (space or buildup).

I'm still a n00b, but I want to know if there is any strategy like this, as it seems like it would be fun to do properly.

what's hard about terra maps is that there is such a long gap between astronomy and communism. and they're huge, bigger than a regular map, which definitely favors the ai on hard difficulties.

it's going to start to depend a lot on which civ you are playing. you could turtle up in the old world, then take it over with cannons while the imperialists are trying to expand. or you could rush out settlers just to spin off a colony. whatever. good luck;p

uhhhh, the times i've won on terra (emperor) it was by outrunning the ai to the new world and just having more land.

The only point of playing terra to me is to play the suggested way. Otherwise might as well play pangaea.

Yes that's the biggest problem and your courthouse strategy is top priority. If there are enough cities in the old world, even consider building the forbidden palace there before even going overseas and then build the palace in the new world. It's cheaper, and doesn't require a courthouse, and with bureaucracy helps expansion over there. Then again if you have 8 cities in the old world it really does suggest it would be a lot quicker to conquer that.

Terra gives you an extra option if you get blocked at the end of the starting continent. With a compact, low-maintenance empire you can generally beat the AI to Astronomy, settle a good chunk of the New World, and get right back in the game.

Other than that, I agree with pi-r8: play it like Pangaea. As an added bonus, Rifling coincides nicely with the AI's scramble to the New world, which makes Rennaissance war even easier than normal. :D Then you can get a foothold on the New World by taking cities in a peace treaty

I have played several Terra maps in past RPCs

Joao : http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=271393
Which required Joao to build the Palace in the new world, spin off the old as a colony, and win. Got a Space race victory.

Louis : http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=274874:
Where I had to Ignore the New World which edned in a loss.

Elizabeth : http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=289783
Where I kept all of the new world lands yet refused to adopt modern civics. Space Race win.

PAcal : http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=291030
Where I had a poster move Pacal to the isolated New World with raging BArbarians and was forced to keep the civilized Old World Europe out resulting in a Space Race win after Nuclear armageddon of the Old World.

Kublai : http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=320417
Complete conquest of 18 leaders (no vassals) including tracking down the craven cowards holed up in the new world (and finding cool BArbarian Grenaders!).

There are many, many ways to play out a Terra Map and I tackled several different angles.

Ive had some good games with Ragnar using the stategy you outline for a domination victory.

His UU realy come into play when you get to the new world(amphibious berserkers-no need to get out the galleon ,just zip round taking every city you can find),rather than taking settlers conquer the barbs by force, then your new citys will build the settlers.

Ragnars FIN trait means you can get a good tech lead, and his UB will mean your boats get there quicker.

I wouldnt worry too much about State property(although Beeline it through LIB maybe)as court houses and Forbidden Palace should keep your head and tech above water.

As to your first point about avoiding war,it all depends on what VC your going for,if its conquest or domination then fight, diplomatic VC then maybe peace would be better.
