After multiple new threads in Civ3 GD asked the same question about the diplo screen with more than 8 civs, I posted that the answer was in the FAQ and got flamed.

One comment that followed was the premise that any number of new threads is OK, because threads are not getting bumped off page one at this time.

But I was under the impression that eventually a huge number of threads would impact server performance and storage requirements. True or false?

A new thread doesn't use more space than a new post. In fact, the total size for all posts on the forum is less than 15% of the total database size. The attachments take up most of the space.

oh well... sometimes it's probably easier to just answer newbie's question... :D

No! Thank YOU sumthinelse! You've braved the depths of the GD forum just to be flamed. :( If I had enough courage I'd go back in there. :ack:

And these newbies need to be taught a lesson :p ;)

Oh, it's not that bad. I am now visiting the GD forum regularly and things had been pretty slow... ;) About the most 'exciting' thing in the past week was someone telling us how to unload units fr armies...

In my experience most new posters show up in GD forum first before eventually spilling in to OT.

GD forum just before PTW was a manageable and interesting place to discuss Civ3 but for now it is way out of control with a flood of newbies posting threads at the range of about a half page worth a day.

I've been involved in several proposals to start some kind of "Q and A" forum and they've all been shot down. Another idea: what about a postcount requirement for starting new threads? Just 30 would do, like the custom title.

This would eliminate the "How do I get my units to attack?" "Hey is anybody there, how do I get my units to attack?" "Well I just bought Civ3, these are the improvements I would like to see" and various other threads and REALLY encourage stark raving newbies to hit the newbie Q and A thread.

It's a nice idea, but I fear that you will get even more bashing in the threads. Some people just can't stand to be treated like 2nd rate forum users.

And I think it's not THAT bad in the GD. Mostly it's not too difficult to find the useful threads between the 'how do I attack' questions. It would be nice if we all would treat each other with a little more respect, though.

I went to a forum once where they had a post count requirement before you could open threads. And they didn't let you even post in some forums until you had the required amount (mostly the easiest forums that could be spammed by a newbie answering every thread down the list. :ack: ) They did ok. Of course, they were women, so I don't think it would work at CFC.... ;)
