Oh jeebus that reminds me of a time where everyone on the team, except for one person, went medic, and they were all healing the same guy. Then suddenly a Third Degree pyro rushes and murders everyone.

If you want, you can add me to Steam and I'll do my best to assist you in learning the game. TF2 tends to be... Much more difficult than other games.
If you are just getting started, I would recommend soldier/pyro. They are both jack-of-all trades classes that allows you to get a well-rounded experience in dealing with pretty much every other classes in the game.
Also go to Advanced Option and click "Show Damage Indicator" or something like that. It will make a hit sound to confirm that your bullet/projectile did indeed hit someone and also show you how much damage you inflicted on them.
Major Part of the game is damage management. You want to have an idea of how much health the enemy has at every point in the game. It's a difference between getting a kill or getting shot at while trying to run away.

I think the best way to choose teams would simply be to randomize the list of players and have the first 9 be BLU and the rest be RED. Then have the teams work out who will be what.

Really? I typically play on their servers or on the Bar Room's. I wonder if we've brutally murder each other before.
