Hmm, gotten 80 of those blasted overpowered demomen. And made a spray too.

Edit: and just gotten a 100th demoman kill a few seconds ago.

indeed. i have recently discovered that is it definitely possible to be a good pyro against reasonable players. pyro does have some very specific skills that need to be mastered in order to succeed though, primarily the airblast and it uses - to remove threats, save points, return damage to soldiers, save sentry guns, push scouts into a corner, distract aim of opponent. the other two skills lie in the use of the secondary and melee weapons, the flare gun and the axstinguisher. these are pretty much essential - a good aim with the flare gun is fantastic for dealing with burning scouts fleeing, or just for causing havoc on an enemy attack (most good medics would rather release an ubercharge early if they are on fire). the axstinguisher is the most powerful weapon in the pyros arsenal - it can take out any class, except the heavy, in one hit if they are not overhealed.

Anyone who says you need to use the airblast to be a good pyro is wrong.

its possible to beat bad players without it, and just equip the backburner (which i will admit has some uses, such as flanking people pushing the cart). however, the airblast is infinitely more effective when it comes to actual use in the vast majority of situations.
 
I routinely dominate public servers as a pyro with the backburner. It may not be the most lethal way to play, but hell it's easily the most efficient way to play as a pyro.
 
Until along comes a soldier who can handle a rocket launcher well and makes you eat crits.

Airblast is an underrated ability that the pyro has. You can reflect, deflect, push away, extinguish, and hell, even rocket jump with it. Backburner is more of a brute force weapon. (IMHO)
