Thailand & Cambodia are awesome!

Looks like a good place to read a book.

Looks like a good place to read a book.

I am pretty sure I didn't do any reading that day because of how tired and out of it I was, but I always have a novel or two with me when I travel. There's usually one in my daypack, and backups in my large backpack as well. Gives you something to do when you're bored on a bus or stuck inside on a rainy day... or end up on a beautiful beach. :)

According to my notes I finished a Iain M. Banks novel the next day actually.. but I can't remember which one.

I love to explore, and Bangkok seemed like a very interesting and safe urban jungle to explore... for the most part. I took it easy and stuck to my feet and the general area around my hotel....

That is a part of something I wrote on day 1/page 1. Were you meaning to quote it? Do you have a question?

edit: I am actually going to revisit that part whenever this all gets compiled and put up on my travel site.. I think it makes sense. but maybe you're onto something andy, maybe the wording is confusing. How can I love to explore and only stick to the general area around my hotel?? Well, it all makes sense in context you see, on my first day in the country I was exhausted and didn't want to venture far. But maybe it doesn't make as much sense as I thought - or you're just reading random sentences and posting random stuff.

Koh Phi Phi Lee island

The previous beach was on the larger of the two islands - Koh Phi Phi Don. We were now headed to the smaller island - Koh Phi Phi Lee (or Ley or Leh or Lay)

There we explored several beautiful bays, including Loh Samah bay. I consider this part of the world as some of the most beautiful I've ever seen. The weather was cooperating, the water was impossibly clear, and it all just looked incredible.

It was the latter. The new fad among spambots these days is to copy random text from earlier in a thread and repost it, and then only post their ad links after several of these copy-paste posts. That way they look more human and don't get banned immediately.

Our robot overlords still have a long way to go before passing the Turing test. ;)

You know, I went through that guy's post history and looked at a couple random posts, and some seemed fishy, but in the end I gave him the benefit of the doubt. Cause sometimes with noobs you just don't know :p Seems like you wouldn't want me to be administering Turing tests either.

Maya Bay

Maya Bay has always been popular, but ever since The Beach (starring Leonardo Di Caprio) was filmed there in 1999, the bay has become a top tourist destination for international visitors.

It's not surprising why it's so popular.. It's amazingly beautiful.

The beach was packed. There was no point in trying to find a place to lie down.. So I walked around and made attempts to take pictures devoid of people. It wasn't easy...

I like the contrast of the old boats with the improvised outboards and the new boats with 3 modern outboards.

So many pale bodies! Beautiful though!

So easy to get burned for a someone with my complexion.. I always had a supply of sunscreen, sunglasses, and a sunhat on me.

But to be fair in a lot of cases it was actually not that easy to take pictures from the actual beach. I think the combination of the way the sand looked, the crystal clear and turquoise water, and the bright sun just confused my camera a bit. Most of the pictures I've posted are fine, but in two of them objects in the water might appear whiter than they actually are. I couldn't really figure out the aperture and/or shutter speed settings that would work best for the odd conditions.

Another factor: This place is probably the most touristy beach in all of Thailand. :p Thailand as a whole gets a lot of western visitors (from western Europe, North America, Australia, etc.), but also from places like Russia. So this very well might be the whitest part of all of Thailand. For all the reasons given above.

I somehow didn't even really notice that. All I can think of when looking at those pictures is "look how I managed to get a picture with almost no one in it!" [pimp]

And I guess I was probably trying to block out all those modern boats... Place was packed with them

So many pictures from this spot just look way too good..

There are even less people right at the edge of the beach... but still one guy manages to get into the shot.

I walked over to the other end of the beach.. It's not an awfully large place.

I met up with my German friend Lisa, who was at this point a full fledged day trip buddy. I'm usually not that good with people, so who the hell knows how I was able to gain her confidence so quickly. I was incredibly tired and don't really remember a thing... and for the first 20 minutes of our conversation she was speaking German to me, and I missed about 75% of that.. So who the hell knows what happened, but either way it was nice to have someone to enjoy the moment with - and to complain about all the people there to.

Our next destination was a beach on the larger island (I think) and lunch.

I'm not sure what they were actually selling, but I doubt it was actually bees. My #1 guess is beef, but who knows.

You can eat bees. I've been served fried baby bees as a festive dish at Chinese New Year. Crunchy, didn't taste of much.

I believe in Japan they have them mushy rather than fried, which is Just Wrong.

I might try it. I ate an ant in northern Thailand, but said no to scorpion in Bangkok. Would have eaten more ant if it wasn't so annoying to catch - but it tasted like candy. Bees don't seem so appetizing in comparison, but I'm open to being convinced.

Phi phi islands day trip concludes

Lunch was had in a building on this beach:

Lunch wasn't very good, except for the deep fried chicken wings.

And you know what? I completely forgot about the snorkeling. That was right before lunch. There are no pictures, but the equipment was much better than the first time I went.. and there were more fish. AND some guy gave me a bunch of bread and fish swam up to my hands and ate bread right out of them. I really liked that part.

Here's a couple more pictures from the rest of the day:

When I got back to the guest house I complained to the owner about the noisy troublemakers from last night.. I figured if enough people complained, they might get kicked out... but that's not what happened. What happened was I was upgraded to a superior room in a different part of the building - with a TV and balcony.

It was unexpected but very welcome! I slept like a baby that night.

An attempt at revenge and Ko Pha Ngan island

It was Sunday, December 8th, 2014 - my last day in Krabi Province.

I woke up just after 7am, showered, got dressed, packed up my bags, quadruple checked my room (as per tradition), and stepped out into the hallway.. then made my way down the stairs. A van was picking me up at 8. I had enough time for a breakfast downstairs.. but first..

I had a plan. And I'm usually a very easy going guy.. calm and relaxed.. and I don't even believe in revenge. But I had enough. The guys that kept me up all night two days ago had to pay.

The plan was to bang on their door and hope that they're too hungover to be able to fight me. I was aware that it was a stupid plan.. and so I stood there in front of their door, wondering what I'm going to do. I had two conflicting ideas in my mind: 1. This is a really stupid idea and there is a probably a very good reason why I usually don't do things like this. and 2. I need to do this to satisfy my newly awakened sense of justice.

And as with any plan worth pursuing, this plan needed a step 2... My brain came up with two options for things to say when that door flung open. One was a sarcastic inquisition regarding a pen and the other one was a raised voice exclaiming: "Good morning, !@#@$".

This was a really stupid plan. But.. When I travel I like to throw myself out out of my element.. in order to improve myself, so that I can lead a better life and be a better person.

So F it, I started banging on that door. I put as much effort as I could into the motion of my right fist hitting the door, with a steady, yet unmistakably mad rhythm. I didn't know what I was going to say. I sort of didn't really care. It didn't matter anymore. I was doing it. I was banging on the door. It felt dangerous, but very satisfying.

And after 15 seconds.. I stopped.

Silence.

Were they even there? I suppose maybe they weren't.. But I distinctly remember thinking that for many reasons they probably still were. Did they drink so much that they were out cold?

I wasn't sure what was going on, but it was time to go. I banged on the door a bit more for good measure, went downstairs, ordered breakfast, and ate.. half waiting for my bus, half expecting two half asleep guys to be walking through that door, in my general direction.. any minute now..

Several people exited, but nobody looked angry. Nothing happened.

The van finally arrived, picked me up, and after making sure to leave a hefty tip with the guest house owner I departed towards the bus station... which turned out to be an incredibly lacking bus station as far as bus stations go... but I did meet someone interesting there: a Ubisoft employee from Germany! We discussed video games, video game creation, and exchanged stories about our trips.

If you're wondering where I was actually headed, it was to the other coast - from the Andaman sea in the west, to the Bay of Thailand in the east:

I was pretty tired for the boat ride over to Ko Pha Ngan island. I ended up alone in a "VIP" cabin upstairs that nobody else wanted to pay for. There were a bunch of Scandinavians sitting in the back initially, and some other people, but when the conductor dude showed up, everyone left. I was comfortable, so I paid and stayed..

In a couple hours we were docking.. I got off the boat, pulled out the name and address of the place I had booked, and tried to find a taxi.

Turns out a guy on a motorcycle was going to be my taxi. He put my large backpack in front, and I sat in the back and held on for dear life. It was awesome and at times terrifying.

I made it to my new room just fine, had a not so great dinner, and crashed hard.
